What do Allianz Home and Contents Insurance policies cover?

Allianz offers both Buildings Insurance and Content Insurance policies. We’ve summarised some of the inclusions and features of each below.

Buildings Insurance

Allianz says its Buildings Insurance is designed to protect a policyholder’s buildings, inside and out, for loss or damage up to a certain dollar value. Coverage may include the physical structures that make up the home like the house itself, garage, sheds, swimming pools and decks from events including fire, theft and storms.

Allianz advertises a range of features for its Buildings Insurance policy, including:

  • Up to 10% on your first year’s premium when purchasing a new policy online
  • Up to 30% no claims bonus
  • Option to increase your excess which may reduce your premium
  • Optional extras include flood cover, motor burnout cover and domestic workers compensation if you employ people to work at your property (available in ACT, WA and TAS)
  • Up to $5,000 towards installing environmental systems, like rainwater tanks and solar power systems, after your building is destroyed and Allianz has agreed to rebuild it
  • Up to $20 million legal liability cover
  • A variety of payment options

Contents Insurance

Allianz says its Contents Insurance is designed to protect the belongings at your home, such as furniture, appliances, computers, clothing and shoes from events including fire, storm, theft and vandalism or malicious damage.

Allianz advertises a range of features for its Contents Insurance policy, including:

  • Up to 10% discount on your first year’s premium if you purchase a new policy online
  • Up to 30% no claims bonus
  • Option to increase your excess which may reduce your premium
  • Option to increase your cover to include: specified contents that are listed separately, portable contents, motor burnout
  • Guests’, visitors’ and domestic helpers’ property covered (maximum coverage level applies)

Allianz says that policyholders may be eligible for a discount of up to 10% when they combine building and contents cover.

Allianz Home Insurance FAQs

Generally speaking, building insurance covers any part of your house that is permanently fixed and not intended to move, such as your walls and roof, and even the light on your front porch. Contents insurance covers certain items within your house that are not permanent fixtures, i.e. you could move them between houses.

See the Allianz PDS on its website for information on possible exclusions.

As a renter, you generally don’t need home insurance because your landlord should have insurance for the building you live in, and if you live in a unit/apartment or townhouse, the body corporate is legally required to have building insurance for the building. But you can consider contents insurance to protect your own possessions.

Some providers offer specialised renter’s insurance policies.

For landlords, a specific landlord insurance policy is an option to consider. Landlord insurance is designed to cover you for the same things as a home insurance policy, but with several additions to cover you against risks from your tenants.

Depending on your choice of cover, Allianz Landlord Insurance may cover repairs for damage caused by your tenants, or your legal fees if you need to sue tenants who are not paying rent.

If you have a recent and accurate estimate for the value of your home and contents, then you could choose to insure up to that particular sum.

If you don’t have an accurate idea of the above value, then you could insure for a complete replacement.

You can make a claim in several ways: by using the dedicated mobile app, filling in a form online, calling Allianz’s phone hotline or contacting it via post. According to Allianz, the mobile app allows you to record details of damage at the scene, take photos and upload them, and receive an instant claim number along with claim tracking functionality.

Alternatively, Allianz says the online form process takes roughly 10 minutes, after which an Allianz representative will call you to discuss the details.

Allianz was established in 1914 as the Manufacturers’ Mutual Accident Insurance Association. MMI acquired the Australian business arm of Allianz in 1986 before Allianz AG acquired the majority shareholding in MMI in 1998 and changed its name to Allianz Australia in 2000. Allianz employs around 4,300 staff across Australia and New Zealand.
