Poncho Car Insurance

Poncho Insurance is a provider that specialises in car insurance. We have provided a summary of the cover available from Poncho Insurance below.

What types of car insurance does Poncho offer?

Unlike some other insurers which offer a range of policies and cover options, Poncho offers one catch-all comprehensive insurance policy that covers all cars you wish to insure. If you wish to insure multiple drivers on the one policy, then Poncho will allow you to do this as well, with a flat excess of $800 for each.

If you’re unsure about which kind of car insurance is most appropriate for you, or you’d like more information on the differences between the different levels of cover, here’s our guide to the different kinds of car insurance. You can also read more about comprehensive car insurance in particular.

Comprehensive car insurance

Poncho offers one comprehensive car insurance policy, covering you for loss or damage to your car caused by a variety of incidents, as well as legal liabilities for you and anyone using your car with your consent. Poncho covers you for loss or damage to your car throughout the insurance period, caused by:

  • Accidental collision
  • Fire or explosion
  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Vandalism
  • Storm, flood or water
  • Lightning or hail
  • Accident

Poncho will cover your legal liability for damage your vehicle or trailer causes to other people’s vehicles and property up to $20 million. Some exclusions, limitations and other terms and conditions apply, so it’s important to read Poncho’s product disclosure statement (PDS) carefully.

Poncho Car Insurance FAQs

With its comprehensive car insurance policy, Poncho offers additional ‘extra covers’ including:

  • Emergency travel and accommodation if you’re more than 200km from home
  • Towing costs for one tow
  • Storage costs at an approved place if your car is damaged
  • Keys and locks up to $1,000 if your keys are stolen

If you decide to cancel your insurance, Poncho will allow you to do this any time, free of charge, refunding any premiums you have paid covering the remaining period of insurance. Note that terms and conditions apply to many of these extra covers, so read the PDS or contact Poncho for more details.

No, Poncho will not allow you to choose between market and agreed value for your vehicle, and will cover you for agreed value only. If you’re not sure which one would be best for your vehicle specifically, here’s an article of ours which could help you make your mind up.

If you choose to go with Poncho, you can get a car insurance quote directly through its website.

Poncho insurance offers an excess of $800 for drivers who are listed on your insurance policy, and $3,000 for unlisted drivers. The excess for unlisted drivers is not payable if your car is damaged during a mechanical service, valet service or car wash, if the unlisted driver was qualified and paid to repair or test your car, or if the car has been stolen.

You can lodge a claim with Poncho Insurance by using your online self service account on the Poncho Insurance website, or by calling the customer care number listed on the website. Once the claim has been lodged, Poncho says that it will manage the claim process while keeping you informed.

Poncho Insurance has no lock-in contracts and instead operates on what it calls a subscription-style service, where premiums are paid on a month-to-month basis, via direct debit. Poncho will contact you 14 days before the expiry of your policy with an invitation to renew.

Consider comparing car insurance policies before simply renewing the same policy, so that you continue to get the cover you need as well as value for money:
