Navy Health is a provider of a variety of insurance products, including health insurance, travel insurance and life insurance, to current or ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force and other employees of the Department of Defence.

What health insurance products does Navy Health offer?

Navy Health provides cover to its members for a range of health expenses. At the time of writing, Navy Health offers hospital, extras and combined cover for the following membership options:

  • Single membership: Covers one adult only
  • Couple membership: Provides cover for a member and their spouse or partner
  • Family membership: Provides cover for a member and their spouse or partner, plus any dependent children (i.e. unmarried children until they turn 22 or enter into a de facto relationship, or any unmarried children between the ages of 22 and 25 who are undertaking full-time study in Australia)
  • Single-parent family: Provides cover for one adult and their dependent children
  • Kids only: Provides cover for a member’s dependent children only. The adult who is listed as a member is not covered under the policy
  • Military family memberships: Provides cover to the family of a serving person, however the serving person is not listed or covered by the policy
  • Young adult membership: This membership provides extras cover for non-student dependants over the age of 22 but under 25 years old. They can remain under an existing family hospital policy at no additional cost.

From here, Navy Health can build a personalised health insurance policy based on the information that you provide it in relation to your personal needs and circumstances.

Additionally, Navy Health offers a 10% discount on payable premiums if you are a serving ADF member, Active Reservist or are a DVA cardholder.

Navy Health health insurance FAQs

Navy Health membership is open to serving or ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force (this includes the Navy, Army and Air Force), as well as:

  • Ex-dependants of serving and ex-serving members of the ADF
  • Current and former employees and contractors of the Department of Defence
  • Australian Public Service Employees assigned to or engaged in providing services to the Department of Defence or the ADF
  • Current or former members of ADF Reservists or Cadets
  • Current or former employees and contractors of Navy Health

You may also be able to join Navy Health if you are related to any of these eligible people, or any members of Navy Health as at 12 October 2007, or if you or a family member were a Navy Health member before 16 June 2017.

You can manage your Navy Health policy by logging into the Navy Health online member services portal. From here, members can see details of their membership, review their claims history, update their contact details and change their coverage, among other things.

Yes, Navy Health offers unlimited general dental cover as part of its Healthy Living Extras or Premium Extras policies, or up to $500 of general dental cover a year under its Budget Extras policy. General dental covers items which are listed by the Australian Dental Association (ADA), up to a set rebate. This can include teeth restoration and fillings, and Occlusal Therapy. Waiting periods apply to Navy Health’s general dental cover, however. These are currently 12 months if you choose Budget Extras cover or two months if you choose either of the more expensive options.

Navy Health says that its Budget Extras, Healthy Living Extras or Premium Extras cover can be taken as a standalone product or combined with any of its hospital policies.

Once you’ve received medical treatment or made a purchase covered by your policy, the next step is to make a claim.

You can make a claim by logging into the online Navy Health member services portal online or via the Navy Health App and following the prompts. Contact Navy Health Insurance or visit the Navy Health insurance website if you need assistance.

At the time of writing, Navy Health does not offer Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). At the time of writing, Navy Health does not offer Working Visa Health Cover (also known as Overseas Visitor Health Cover or OVHC). However, if you’re on an overseas visa and are from a country with a reciprocal healthcare agreement, you could be eligible for another local policy.
