Yes. Your health insurance does not cover you overseas. If you are travelling overseas, you need travel insurance. Apia also offers travel insurance, and you can compare travel policies on the Canstar website.

And vice versa – travel insurance only covers you while you are away from home on a trip. While you are in Australia, you need health insurance if you want to be covered for private healthcare costs. Find out more about the difference between health insurance and travel insurance here.

Once you’ve received medical treatment or made a purchase covered by your policy, the next step is to make a claim. There are several ways you can lodge a claim with Apia:

  1. On-the-spot: Around 20,000 Australian specialist providers have the HICAPS electronic claim system – just make sure you remember to bring your Apia health insurance membership card to process the claim immediately.
  2. Online: Log into your Apia account to make your claim online. Have your Apia policy number, your motor or home event information and details of any other people involved. Claim online is only for holders of eligible Apia policies. Claim online is not available for the following claim types: Third Party Property Damage (all vehicle types), Boat, Travel, Funeral, Injury and Compulsory Third Party (CTP).
  3. Over the phone: You can make a claim over the phone – and this is the option Apia recommends for all complex claims – by calling Apia: 13 50 50 (open 24/7).

Apia will then make the payment, either by bank transfer or by sending you a cheque.

Apia is one of Australia’s leading insurance and financial services brands, forming part of the Suncorp Group.
