Yes. Your health insurance does not cover you overseas. If you are travelling overseas, you need travel insurance. HBF also offers travel insurance, and you can compare travel policies on the Canstar website.

And vice versa – travel insurance only covers you while you are away from home on a trip. While you are in Australia, you need health insurance if you want to be covered for private healthcare costs. Find out more about the difference between health insurance and travel insurance here.

Once you’ve received medical treatment or made a purchase covered by your policy, the next step is to make a claim. There are several ways you can lodge a claim with HBF health insurance:

  1. On-the-spot: Around 20,000 Australian specialist providers have the HICAPS electronic claim system – just make sure you remember to bring your GMF or HBF membership card to process the claim immediately.
  2. Mobile app: Make claims using the HBF Health app. Simply take a photo of your receipt using your smartphone and submit the claim for a benefit instantly (requires connection via mobile data or WiFi).
  3. Online: Log into your myHBF account to make your claim online. Simply the details found on your receipt, and have your BSB and bank account number ready for immediate transfer of your benefit from HBF into your bank account.
  4. By Post: You can fill out a claim form, attach your invoice and receipt from the specialist provider, and post this paperwork to:

HBF

GPO Box 1440

Perth WA 6809

HBF will then make the payment, either by bank transfer or by sending you a cheque.

GMF was founded in 1953 in Kalgoorlie, WA, as the Goldfields Medical Fund. In 1992 in Kalgoorlie, HealthGuard Health Benefits Fund was founded, which would later join forces with GMF in 2002. Since June 2015, GMF has been owned by HBF.

GMF won the coveted CANSTAR Award for Outstanding Value Health Insurance (WA) in 2015. GMF is one of the not-for-profit Members Own Health Funds in Australia, meaning profits are returned to members in the form of cheaper premiums.

Parent company HBF provides strong support to the Australian community. Each year, HBF employees based in Western Australia donate about $50,000 to local charities through payroll deductions, plus another $50,00 from fundraising activities.
