Petsy is a pet insurance brand in Australia and sells policies on behalf of Petinsurance.com.au.

What types of pet insurance does Petsy offer?

Petsy, in partnership with Petinsurance.com.au, offers six different levels of cover for dogs, cats, indoor cats and puppies. Petsy’s pet insurance products include:

  • Vet Select
  • Vet Basic
  • Dog accidental injury and/or illness cover
  • Puppy accidental injury and/or illness cover
  • Cat accidental injury and/or illness cover
  • Indoor cat illness only cover

Depending on the product you choose, a Petsy pet insurance policy may provide:

  • $0 excess payable (this is available on all policies)
  • Up to 100% back on eligible claims
  • Lifelong protection (as long as there are no gaps or changes in cover and subject to any renewal terms and conditions)
  • Ability to choose any licensed vet in Australia
  • Access to GapOnly™, which allows you to claim on the spot and only pay the gap
  • Access to Petsy member benefits for both pets and their owners
  • Online claim service

Petsy also offers the option of adding cover for routine care. This can provide a benefit, up to a limit, for treatments such as desexing, microchipping, heartworm treatment, flea/tick/worm control and vaccinations, and expenses such as council registration fees and obedience training.

What sorts of pets does Petsy pet insurance cover?

Petsy says its pet insurance covers dogs and cats, including indoor cats and puppies. Petsy says you can insure multiple pets under your policy. Each pet can also have their own policy with their own choice of cover. This can be organised through the Petinsurance.com.au customer service team.

What is not covered by Petsy pet insurance?

Petsy says it will not cover certain situations, including pre-existing conditions, conditions arising within the waiting period, and elective treatments. Read the product disclosure statement (PDS) to see a full list of exclusions.

What is the age limit for pets covered by Petsy pet insurance?

At the time of writing, the following entry age limits apply to Petsy pet insurance products:

  • Vet Select – older than eight weeks and younger than five years
  • Vet Basic – older than eight weeks and younger than five years
  • Dog accident and illness cover – older than six months and younger than nine years
  • Dog accidental injury cover – from six months
  • Puppy accident and illness cover – older than eight weeks and younger than six months
  • Puppy accidental injury cover – older than eight weeks and younger than six months
  • Cat accident and illness cover – older than eight weeks and younger than nine years
  • Cat accidental injury cover – from eight weeks
  • Indoor cat illness only cover – older than eight weeks and younger than nine years

For both cats and dogs, the age of your pet may affect the benefit paid for eligible claims with selected policies.

Petsy pet insurance comes with lifelong protection. This means you can continue to be covered as long as there are no breaks, gaps or changes in cover, subject to the terms and conditions of the renewal policy.

Petsy pet insurance FAQs

Petsy does not say that you need to provide your pet’s medical records in order to take out its pet insurance. However, you may need to provide your pet’s medical history as part of the claims process.

Yes, Petsy says you can use any vet who is licensed to practise in Australia.

Yes, Petsy currently has the following annual benefit limits:

  • Vet Select – $25,000
  • Vet Basic – $6,000
  • Dog accidental injury and/or illness cover – $10,000
  • Puppy accident and illness cover – $10,000
  • Puppy accidental injury cover – $8,000
  • Cat accident and illness cover – $3,000 for accidental injuries and $3,000 for illnesses
  • Cat accidental injury cover – $3,000
  • Indoor cat illness only cover – $5,000

Petsy pet insurance also has sub-limits that apply to certain conditions, such as paralysis ticks and cruciate ligament conditions. Check the PDS for more information.

Petsy will pay up to 100% of eligible vet costs, up to the annual benefit limit or sub-limit under your policy. At the time of writing, the following benefit percentages apply:

  • Vet Select – 100% for pets aged between eight weeks and eight years, 65% for pets aged over eight years
  • Vet Basic – 90% for pets aged between eight weeks and eight years, 65% for pets aged over eight years
  • Dog accidental injury and/or illness cover – 80%
  • Puppy accidental injury and/or illness cover – 80%
  • Cat accidental injury and/or illness cover – 80%
  • Indoor cat illness only cover – 80%

You can purchase Petsy pet insurance online or by calling 1300 855 663. When applying, you will need to provide information about your pet including its breed, date of birth and whether it has been desexed.

You can lodge a pet insurance claim with Petsy via the Petinsurance.com.au customer portal. Petsy says you will be able to register for the portal when you take out a policy. If you don’t have access, Petsy says you can also call the customer service team for claim forms.

To make a claim, Petsy says you will need to provide a copy of your vet’s tax invoice and consultation notes. If it is your first claim, you will also need to provide a full veterinary history.

Alternatively, you may be able to claim on the spot through GapOnly™. This allows you to pay the gap (the difference between the vet’s invoice and the insurance claim benefit) at the time of the treatment.

Petsy says your policy will automatically renew each year (unless you notify them otherwise) on the terms set out in the renewal offer. Petsy says the renewal offer will be sent to you advising you of the renewal date and any changes to your existing cover.
