When you first see our results, they're shown in what we call our Top Picks order. This is simply the order we display products in, based on the factors listed below. It’s not a ranking of what's best for your circumstances. You can change the sort order at any time to choose the order you wish to see the products in. If a tie-breaker is needed, products will be ordered by Online Partners, and then other products.

Top Picks sort order is based on: 

• Product value — how competitive the product is on price and features
• Canstar Cover Ratings — our expert assessment
• Sales performance — how often people go on to purchase the product after leaving our site. Products that consumers rarely choose to purchase may appear lower in our Top Picks sort order
• Partner fees — products from partners who pay us  a fee for referring customers to them or when customers apply for or take out a product appear higher in our sort order

The Home Insurance Cover Ratings are updated daily, based on the information held in our database at the time of rating. While we aim to maintain daily updates, there may be occasional delays. Cover Ratings reflect the data available as at the date listed in the Cover Rating pop-up on the table. The results don’t include every provider in the market or every product from each provider and we may not compare all features relevant to you.

Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands, but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. What is a Target Market Determination?

A Target Market Determination (‘TMD’) is a document that explains which people particular financial products may be suitable for (the target market) and sets out any conditions around how financial products can be distributed to consumers.

Why do product issuers provide Target Market Determinations?

TMDs are compulsory for most financial products. TMDs are compulsory for most financial products.

Issuers and distributors of financial products must take reasonable steps that are likely to result in financial products reaching consumers in the target market defined by the product issuer. Canstar takes this responsibility seriously. As a distributor, we periodically review the TMDs of products we list on our website to help ensure our distribution channels are likely to result in the products reaching consumers within the relevant target market. This is one of the reasonable steps we take to comply with our obligations.

We recommend that you consider the TMD before making a purchase decision. For example, landlord insurance general does not provide cover if the property is used for short-term holiday letting or other commercial activities, rather than long-term residential activities. Check the insurance provider’s policy documentation carefully to ensure you are covered for your situation. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD.
