Sourcing your energy and telco plans from a single retailer can take the hard work out of managing your bills – and is even more lucrative when bundling discounts are on offer. Combine two or more services, and you can score ongoing discounts, sign-up credits or other perks.
On paper, bundling is the easy alternative to the ‘pick and mix’ approach of comparing plans from multiple providers. So we’ve done the math to see how these deals really stack up.
What can you save with a bundle discount?
There are currently a handful of providers in Australia offering both energy (electricity and gas) and telco plans (internet and mobile) in selected states.

Below, we’ve worked out what you might pay for bundling electricity, an NBN plan and a SIM-only mobile plan with two providers that offer all three with a discount: AGL and Dodo.
For our calculations, we’ve used the following:
- A single rate electricity plan on the Ausgrid network in New South Wales, using 3,900kWh per year
- An unlimited NBN 500 plan (standard price only, no other discounts applied)
- A SIM-only plan with at least 20GB of data each month/recharge (standard price only, no other discounts applied).
AGL and Dodo each offer separate discounts for bundling internet or mobile with an electricity and/or gas plan, but these are stackable. With those bundling discounts applied, here’s what a customer might pay in total over 12 months.

If you bundle with AGL, you’ll save $25 per month on NBN and phone combined. Opt for Dodo, and you’ll only save $10 monthly, but Dodo’s overall lower prices mean that your annual bills will be cheaper.
However, AGL’s electricity plan includes a free Netflix with ads subscription, valued at $120 per year. AGL is also currently offering a $150 credit for joining online, provided you stay for 90 days – factor in both those deals, and that’s an extra $270 in savings.
Is it cheaper not to bundle energy and telco?
There’s some advantages to bundling energy and telco. Aside from discounts, you’ll get the convenience of having a single provider covering your major utilities, which can simplify things if you’re moving or just want to streamline your bills.
But if lowering those bills is your biggest concern, mix-and-matching plans will ultimately get you the cheapest prices.
Here’s what you’d pay instead for the current lowest-priced alternatives to AGL and Dodo’s electricity, internet and mobile plans, based on the providers in Canstar’s database. Note that these are standard prices, with no further discounts applied.

Opting for the above plans will save you $669 annually compared to AGL, and $531 compared to Dodo. Even with AGL’s $150 bill credit offer added in, you’re still ahead by $519 each year if you stick with the cheapest deals.
What to look for when comparing utilities
Whether you’re considering bundling with the one provider, or comparing your utilities separately, here’s some quick tips on what to look for:
- Cost breakdowns: Energy plans include both a daily supply charge and a usage cost for how much electricity or gas you actually consume. Time-of-use plans will also charge different usage rates based on the time of day, so it’s important to check these individual costs alongside the advertised average annual price.
- Your usage needs: For internet plans, learn how your usage determines your speed needsbut al. For mobile, consider your typical data use, or if you want international roaming or calls. For electricity and gas, look at how much your home typically uses, especially during peak evening periods (you can usually find this summarised on your bill).
- Discounts and offers: New customer or switching offers are common in both telco and energy, but check the fine print to make sure there are no catches.
- Contract terms: Most providers offer contract-free plans across energy, internet and mobile. Be aware if any minimum terms apply.
- Additional fees and charges: Check for hidden fees or surprise costs (e.g. connection fees for energy, modem fees for internet, excess data fees for mobile).
Don’t assume that bundling discounts will always get you the best deal. The smartest move is to see how that bundle stacks up to other plans on the market – you could be surprised by how much you can save elsewhere.
