How do we calculate the cheapest electricity and gas plans in Brisbane, QLD
Canstar's rates table (near the top of the page) automatically calculates the yearly estimated price of Brisbane electricity and gas plans from our database in real time. The factors below affect each calculation:
- Usage rates: The rate (in c) paid for every kWh of electricity or megajoule (MJ) of gas consumed.
- Supply rates: Fixed costs paid daily (in c) to stay connected to the power grid for electricity and the gas mains for gas.
- Estimated annual usage: The estimated annual energy usage of a residential customer living in the Energex network (for electricity) and the Australian Gas network (for gas). This figure currently sits at 4,600kWh for electricity customers on a single rate tariff and 7,800 MJ for gas customers.
- Reference price (electricity only): The QLD reference price for electricity, also known as the default market offer (DMO), is a price ceiling set by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) every July 1st, shielding customers from being overcharged for their energy use. Currently, QLD’s reference price on the Energex network sits at $2,143/year. On 1 July 2026, the reference price will decrease to $1,988. This year's DMO will also release reference prices for time of use (ToU) tariffs and a new solar sharer offer, with three hours of free electricity between 11am and 2pm.
Conditional and guaranteed discounts are excluded from each plan's estimated cost. Instead, any ongoing discounts are shown as a blue banner under each electricity or gas plan.
You can swap between ‘electricity’ and ‘gas’ plan results by clicking on the toggle at the top of the rates table.
How to use the QLD electricity and gas plans rates table
Our rates table above is set to show all of database's plans for QLD 4000. The results are then organised based on the following presets:
- Lowest to highest estimated annual price
- Single-rate or flat-rate tariffs
- No solar panels installed (only for electricity plans).
You can choose between the built-in filters below to better satisfy your personal preferences:
- Single rate, ToU or controlled load tariffs (for electricity only)
- Monthly, quarterly or estimated cost.
You can also sort the results based on the following orders:
- Estimated price (ascending or descending)
- Provider names alphabetically (ascending or descending)
- Feature rating (ascending to descending)
- Reference price comparison (for electricity only).
Other tariffs in Brisbane that aren't included on our rates table include:
- Demand tariff (electricity only): An additional ‘demand’ charge on top of your supply and usage charges. To be eligible, you will also need a smart meter installed.

What to consider with the cheapest electricity and gas plans in Brisbane, QLD
Bundled electricity and gas discounts
Providers offering electricity and gas plans may offer a bundled discount. However, there is no guarantee that this is cheaper than signing up for electricity and gas plans from two different providers. We recommend verifying which option saves you more money.
Your electricity and gas use
When you use the most electricity
- If you use more electricity during off-peak times, a ToU tariff or demand tariff will save you more.
- If you use more electricity during peak periods, a single rate tariff is cheaper in the long run.
- If you’re running an energy-intensive appliance (e.g. a pool pump), a controlled load tariff meters that appliance independently at a cheaper rate, but you’ll have to restrict its hours of use.
How much electricity or gas you use
- If you don’t use much electricity (e.g. small household), lower supply rates will save you more over time.
- If you don’t use much gas, a flat rate tariff will generally be cheaper than a block rate tariff.
If you’d like to calculate your potential bill savings from switching to the cheapest electricity plan on our database, you can visit our electricity bill calculator page. To get an accurate estimation, we recommend having your latest power bill on hand.
Contract length and expiries
There are two contract types — ongoing and contracts with a fixed contract length:
Ongoing plans permit Aussies to switch to other providers or plans freely with no set expiry.
A plan with a fixed contract length has a set expiry date. Exiting it early attracts penalty fees.
Once that date passes, your provider will move you onto their standing offer (for electricity) or standing contract (for gas).
Standing offers and contracts in QLD follow the state’s reference price, which is typically the highest price providers charge with no added frills (e.g. no discounts). That means you could be left with hundreds of extra dollars out-of-pocket.
It’s important to verify a plan’s contract length in the ‘contract details’ section on its BPID, which is available under the ‘basic plan information’ prompt on our journey’s results page or under the ‘plan details’ prompt below each plan.
If the plan you’re interested in has a fixed contract length, schedule a calendar reminder to switch energy plans right before its set expiry date.
Variable vs fixed rates
Most energy plans have variable rates, meaning they can change at any time, regardless of whether your plan is ongoing or has a fixed contract length. However, you must be notified in writing at least five working days before any changes.
If the cheapest electricity or gas plans in Brisbane are variable rate plans, their annual estimated costs may change frequently. It’s crucial to pay attention to all written communications (e.g. emails) from your provider.
Some retailers also offer fixed-rate plans, whereby you can lock in rates for a fixed contract length (e.g. 12 months). However, fixed-rate contracts are uncommon.
You can verify an energy plan’s rate structure under the ‘Billing and price details’ section in its BPID.
Hidden fees
Ready to make the switch? Make sure you study your current plan’s BPID carefully — it may be hiding pesky fees such as disconnection/connection and exit fees.
