Coles supermarket

While Aussies went collectively mad for Woolworths’ Ooshies earlier in the year, Coles was apparently plotting its own mission to get customers through the door: a free car and a year’s worth of groceries.

In what appears to be the supermarket version of ‘hold my beer’, Coles announced this week that 10 lucky customers around the country will each win an all-electric Mazda CX-6e and $15,000 worth of groceries.

The Mazda CX-6e, worth over $57,000, is provided drive-away, including 12 months’ registration, 12 months’ compulsory third-party insurance, stamp duty, applicable statutory charges, dealer delivery and administration charges.

The Shop, Scan and Win promotion runs from October 7 to November 3. To enter, you’ll need to spend a minimum of $20 in one transaction and scan your Flybuys card. Once you’ve done that, you’ll automatically go into the draw to win.

You can also boost your chances of winning by buying a participating product from one of 13 brands, including Swisse, Dynamo, Schwarzkopf and Earthwise. This will get you a bonus entry in the prize draw.

The competition only applies to purchases made in-store, so you’ll need to skip your click-and-collect or delivery order and leave the house if you want to enter (inconvenient but possibly worth it).

The competition comes as Aussies increasingly feel the pinch from rising cost of living pressures. Canstar data shows the cost of groceries was one of Aussies’ biggest financial worries this year, second only to housing.

While winning a year’s worth of groceries would certainly ease the burden, there are other, more practical ways to save at the checkout.

Swapping big-name products for home-brand alternatives is one of the most effective ways to cut your grocery bill. Canstar research shows a family of four could save up to $2,424 a year by switching half their grocery basket to home-brand alternatives.

You can also compare unit prices between brands and products to find the best value, and avoid the so-called brand-loyalty tax by shopping what’s on special rather than sticking with the same brand every time. Unlike the prize draw, these savings don’t come down to luck.
