Which providers won Canstar's 2022 Home & Contents Insurance Awards?
Canstar is pleased to announce the winners of its 2022 Home & Contents Insurance Awards. Find out which providers are offering outstanding value to their customers.
This year, Canstar’s research team rated over 70 policies from 50 providers on our database. In determining the Star Ratings, our researchers looked at the price and features on offer. That included looking at premiums and excess amounts, as well as the types of events that are covered under each policy.
The National Awards recognise the providers that are offering outstanding value to customers across Australia, while the State Awards are based on providers’ performances within each of the states, territories and regions considered.
Canstar has also surveyed Australian policyholders about their overall satisfaction with the home insurance claims process. The provider with the most satisfied customers overall has been recognised with our Most Satisfied Customers – Home Insurance Claims Award.

We’ve listed these award-winning providers below in alphabetical order, along with some details from Canstar Research about what helped each of them stand out.
AAMI
AAMI’s consistently strong performance saw it win all three National Awards and six of the State Awards on offer. AAMI offers customers a well-balanced policy, Canstar’s researchers noted, with affordable premiums and comprehensive coverage.
Australia Post
Australia Post also picked up all three National Awards, as well as ten State Awards. Australia Post’s strong performance was mainly driven by its price performance, where its average premiums were significantly cheaper than the overall market average, Canstar’s researchers said.
Budget Direct
Budget Direct continues to offer competitively priced policies and this helped it win the National Awards for Home & Contents and Home Insurance this year. Budget Direct does not insure North Queensland or Northern Territory residences, but Canstar’s researchers said it was a consistently strong performer in the regions it does insure.
CommInsure
CommInsure (the insurance division of Commonwealth Bank) won the packaged Home & Contents Insurance Award for North Queensland. For home insurance purposes, Canstar considers North Queensland to be the portion of the state north of Rockhampton. CommInsure offers competitively priced and well-featured policies, our researchers noted.
QBE
QBE is the underwriter of Australia Post’s home insurance policies, but it also offers policies under its own name. QBE’s strong overall performance has seen it win all three National Awards this year.
RAC
RAC took out the Home & Contents Insurance Award for its home state of Western Australia. RAC also had the most satisfied customers in Australia when it came to home insurance claims (more on this below).
RACT
RACT won the Home Insurance Award for its home state of Tasmania. This is the second year in a row that RACT has won this Award.
Suncorp
Finally, Suncorp won the national Contents Insurance Award, as well as five state Contents Insurance Awards. Suncorp offers competitive premiums coupled with strong features, Canstar’s researchers said.
2022 Most Satisfied Customers – Home Insurance Claims Award
RAC has won Canstar’s 2022 Most Satisfied Customers – Home Insurance Claims Award.
Canstar surveyed hundreds of Australians to find out how satisfied they were with their current home insurance provider’s claims process.
We asked Aussies to rate their satisfaction with their provider overall, as well as based on the following factors: ease, process, speed, quality, timeliness and communication.
RAC scored highly across all categories, particularly ease, speed and quality of claims.
