It is a legal requirement to have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance in Victoria, and it is included in the cost of your car registration. CTP insurance is compulsory in all states and territories in Australia. In Victoria, the scheme is operated by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and is sometimes called the ‘TAC charge’.
If you injure or kill someone in a car accident, CTP insurance should cover the cost of compensation claims. Victoria has a ‘no-fault’ insurance scheme, meaning that you can make a claim regardless of whether the accident was your fault.
Only CTP insurance is compulsory, but you may want to take out another type of car insurance to cover a wider range of circumstances.
