About ANZ credit cards

ANZ credit cards are provided by Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ). ANZ offers Low Annual Fee, Low Interest Rate, Rewards and Frequent Flyer credit cards.

ANZ is one of Australia’s big four banks. ANZ provides various banking, investment and insurance products such as credit cards, home loans, car loans, personal loans, bank accounts, superannuation, home insurance, life insurance and car insurance.

ANZ was founded in 1835 in London and Sydney as the Bank of Australasia, merging with Union Bank of Australia to form Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) in 1951. ANZ states that it provides their products and services to more than 8.5 million retail and business customers.

There are a range of important documents that should be read when taking on any credit product, including ANZ credit cards. These include a Target Market Determination (TMD), terms and conditions documents such as a Key Facts Sheet and, in ANZ’s case, its Consumer Credit Card Conditions of Use and the ANZ Personal Banking Account Fees and Charges booklet. You can visit the ANZ website for this documentation. In addition, it’s worth checking the relevant Policy Information Booklet and TMD of any insurance products that are offered through these credit cards so you are aware of the inclusions, exclusions and limits that apply, as well as who the products are suited for.

Frequently Asked Questions about ANZ Credit Cards

Different types of credit cards may have different eligibility criteria. However, in general, to apply for an ANZ credit card, you must meet the following criteria:

  • at least 18 years old.
  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident or hold a on-permanent resident with more than 9 months remaining on your visa
  • have a good credit history
  • agree to a credit check.

Depending on what credit card you apply for, ANZ may require that you don’t currently hold, and haven’t opened or closed, an ANZ travel or rewards credit card in the previous 12 months.

Before you apply, it could be a good idea to check your credit score.

For more information on eligibility requirements, refer to the ANZ website.

If eligibility requirements are met, you can apply online, visit the nearest branch, request a callback online or call on 13 22 73.

ANZ recommends having the following documentations:

  • Australian driver’s licence number
  • Details of your income, assets and liabilities
  • Two recent pay slips for income verification
  • If you’re self-employed, you’ll need your accountant’s phone number
  • Details of your living expenses, such as regular bills
  • ANZ account number or Customer Registration Number (if you have one)
  • Email address

ANZ currently offers Low Annual Fee, Low Interest Rate, Rewards and Frequent Flyer credit cards.

ANZ’s Frequent Flyer credit cards are only compatible with Qantas Frequent Flyer points. ANZ recommends those seeking Velocity Frequent Flyer or other Frequent Flyer points to look into their Rewards credit cards that have airline partners that ANZ Rewards Points can be redeemed for Frequent Flyer points.

You can use the comparison table above to review and compare the credit cards on offer from ANZ.

You can activate your ANZ credit card online either through their ANZ Internet Banking or on the ANZ App. Alternatively, you can visit an ANZ branch or call 13 33 50.

ANZ highlights the importance of reading the accompanying Letter of Offer before activating your ANZ credit card. By activating your ANZ card, you are agreeing to the terms and services outlined in the Letter of Offer.

Interest is charged when you carry a balance on your ANZ credit card. Interest is calculated at the end of each day using the applicable annual interest rate divided by 365. The sum of the daily calculated interest will be calculated on the last day of the statement period.

Interest is charged on cash advances from the date of withdrawal and balance transfers from the date of transfer. Fees and charges may apply. Visit the ANZ website for more details.

When interest is not charged?

ANZ credit cards have an interest-free period of up to 55 days. Your Letter of offer will tell you if you have an interest-free period.

Interest-free days only apply if you have paid the balance in full for the previous month’s statement and for the current month’s statement (the statement on which the purchases are listed). If you do not pay these outstanding charges by the due date, interest will be charged the day after the due date.

The interest-free period can be regained if you pay all outstanding charges on the statement by the due date or if you have a zero or positive balance instead. However, any previous interest charged before you regained your interest-free period can still appear on your statement.

Each ANZ credit card has their own initial credit limit and your initial credit limit will be subject to the information you provide in your application. You can also request for a specific initial credit limit or a maximum credit limit. Both are at ANZ’s discretion, the lender states.

Once the application has been approved, you can find your initial credit limit in your Letter of Offer.

You can change your credit card limit by applying online through ANZ Internet Banking, using their online form, manually filling the application form and following the instructions on the form or contacting ANZ through your nearest branch or calling 1800 119 848.

Any application to increase your credit limit will be subject to ANZ’s usual credit assessment and credit limit requests cannot be below the minimum credit limit that is applied to the ANZ credit card.

You can close your ANZ credit card account at any time by contacting ANZ and making a request online, in-branch, or over the phone on 13 22 73. ANZ says you are responsible for any transactions, as well as related interest charges, ANZ fees, stamp duty and other government charges, that are debited to your credit card account as a result of recurring transaction requests or standing authorities. You need to cancel any direct debits with other parties directly, and ensure your balance is repaid in full.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, you may be able to get help in making repayments by contacting ANZ.

The number of Reward Points you could earn per dollar spent may vary according to the ANZ Rewards credit card type you have. The table at the top of this page displays the points earned per dollar spent for eligible ANZ cards. You can find your initial number of Reward Points you can earn per dollar spent in your Letter of Offer.

ANZ states in their terms and conditions that they will advise you when the number of Points you can earn decreases but are not obligated to advise on when they increase.

ANZ Rewards Points will expire within 36 months of 31 December of the year in which the Points were added to your account. If there are any Points left after their expiry, the Points will be cancelled.

If you close your ANZ Rewards credit card, any remaining unused Rewards points must be used within 90 days of the credit card closure. The Points will be cancelled once the 90 days have passed.

ANZ states that if you’re not already a Qantas Frequent flyer member, you will receive a complimentary membership through ANZ if your ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card is approved. You will have to apply for membership online through Qantas’s ANZ Frequent Flyer website for the joining fee to be waived.

Points earned through your ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card will vary depending on the type of card you have. The table at the top of this page displays the points earned per dollar spent for eligible ANZ cards. ANZ states in their terms and conditions that they will advise in writing the initial number of Points you can earn per dollar spent and when this number decreases. It also states that ANZ are not obligated to advise you on when there is an increase to the number of Points earned per dollar spent.

With your Qantas frequent Flyer account linked, Points earned through your ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card are credited to the account after each statement period. Only whole points are credited.

Important information

For those that love the detail

This advice is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this advice is right for you.

Canstar may earn a fee from its Online Partners for referrals from its website tables, and from sponsorship or promotion of certain products. Fees payable by product providers for referrals and sponsorship or promotion may vary between providers, website position, and revenue model. Sponsorship/promotion fees may be higher than referral fees. If a product is sponsored or promoted, it’s an ad and it is clearly marked as such. An ad might appear in different places on our website, such as in comparison tables and articles. Ads may be displayed in a fixed position in a table, regardless of the product's rating, price or other attributes. The location of an ad doesn’t indicate any ranking or rating by Canstar. Payment of fees for ads does not influence our Star Ratings. See How We Get Paid to find out more.

The Credit Cards Star Ratings are updated daily based on product features at that date, except for the Overseas Travel profile which is updated annually. Current rates, product features and fees are displayed and may be different to what was rated. The results don’t include every provider in the market and we may not compare all features relevant to you. You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. Depending on which card feature/use you are looking at, the results will be sorted as follows:

  • Low fee is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Rewards is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Frequent Flyer is sorted by Star Ratings, then highest airline points per dollar, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Balance Transfer is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest balance transfer rate, then lowest rate for the longest period, then lowest revert rate, then lowest upfront fee, and then alphabetically by brand. Please note that Balance Transfer Star Ratings are not for balance transfer suitability but are instead based on the Low Rate profile.
  • All card types is sorted by highest Points per dollar spent, then lowest Annual fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Overseas Travel is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest currency conversion on purchases, then lowest annual fee.

You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our Credit Cards Star Rating Methodology and our Travel Credit Card and Travel Debit Card Star Ratings Methodology. The Occasional Overseas Traveller rating is shown in the table. The rating shown is only one factor to take into account when considering products.

The products and Star Ratings in the table might not match your exact inputs in the selector. Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands (e.g. income, loan amount or monthly spend), but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. The results will show the products that most closely match your selection, based on our profiles. If you are unsure about any terms used in the comparison table please refer to the glossary.

What is a Target Market Determination?

A Target Market Determination (‘TMD’) is a document that explains which people particular financial products may be suitable for (the target market) and sets out any conditions around how financial products can be distributed to consumers.

Why do product issuers provide Target Market Determinations?

From 5 October 2021, TMDs are compulsory for most financial products.

Issuers and distributors of financial products must take reasonable steps that are likely to result in financial products reaching consumers in the target market defined by the product issuer.

We recommend that you consider the TMD before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD.

Any advice on this page is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this general financial advice is right for your personal circumstances. Canstar provides information about credit products. We’re not suggesting or recommending a particular credit product for you. If you decide to apply for a Credit Card, you will deal directly with the provider, not with Canstar. It’s important you check rates and product information directly with the provider. Consider the Target Market Determination (TMD) before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD. For more information, read our Detailed Disclosure.

Before you elect to terminate or modify existing lending arrangements, it is recommended that you consider all associated fees and application costs, as well as the timing and impact these changes could have on your wider financial arrangements and personal circumstances.
