Regional branch closures slowing
Branch numbers in inner regional, outer regional, remote and very remote areas dropped in total by 29 in FY25. However, the rate of decline is slowing. In FY24, this drop was 52.
The slowing of regional branch closures is partly due to the commitment from the big four banks to keep their regional branches open until at least mid-2027 under a deal struck with the federal government in February.

Bank@Post points of presence almost on the decline
Australia Post’s Bank@Post continues to be an important service across the country, with a total of 3,365 outlets offering this service.
Bank@Post enables customers to carry out basic transactions such as making deposits, withdrawals and balance enquiries at participating Australia Post outlets if their bank has an agreement with Australia Post. Participating banks include three of the big four banks: CBA, NAB and Westpac. ANZ is still working on enabling this service for its customers.
The major cities recorded the biggest decrease, with a drop of 2% or 38 points of presence.

Canstar’s data insights director, Sally Tindall says, “Bank branches are continuing to disappear as Australians and banks continue to go digital.”
“While the rate at which bank branches are closing their doors is continuing to slow, it’s little comfort to those whose local branch has shut up shop. At the end of the day, 155 bank branch closures across the country is still significant.
“That said, it’s encouraging to see the pace of regional branch closures slow over the past year. The APRA data shows that in remote and very remote areas, the number of branch closures in the last financial year was 5 compared to 8 closures the year before.
“The big four banks did the right thing back in February by committing to keep regional branches open until at least mid-2027, but there’s still a huge question mark over what the longer-term future of these branches will look like.
“As banking goes increasingly digital, there’s no doubt more customers are happy to tap, click, transfer and apply online instead of queueing at a branch. The challenge for banks is making sure no one is left behind in this shift.
“Bank@Post continues to play a vital role in filling the gaps left by the branch and ATM closures. For some smaller towns, the local post office might be the only place where people can still deposit cash, take out money or pay bills.
“The shift to digital banking is well and truly underway, but banks, government and regulators still need to work together to make sure innovation doesn’t come at the expense of inclusion.”
