How do we calculate the cheapest electricity and gas plans in Adelaide, SA
Our rates table (near the top of the page) calculates the yearly estimated price of each Adelaide electricity and gas plan from our database in real time. The variables below will impact the final calculation:
- Usage rates: The rate paid (in c) for every kWh of electricity or megajoule (MJ) of gas used.
- Supply rates: Fixed daily cost paid to maintain a connection with the grid (for electricity) and/or the gas mains.
- Estimated annual usage: The estimated annual energy usage of a residential customer living in the SA Powers Network (for electricity) and the Australian Gas Network (for gas). This figure currently sits at 4,000kWh for electricity customers on a single rate tariff and 14,800 MJ for gas customers.
- Reference price (electricity only): The SA reference price, also known as the default market offer (DMO), is a benchmark price set by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) every July 1st, preventing customers from paying too much to keep the lights on. Currently, SA’s reference price on the SA Power Networks sits at $2,301. On 1 July 2026, the reference price will increase to $2,334. The DMO will also introduce reference prices for time of use (ToU) tariffs and a new solar sharer offer that offers free electricity between 12pm and 3pm.
Conditional and guaranteed discounts are not accounted for in each plan’s estimated cost. Ongoing discounts and promotions are shown as a blue banner under each electricity or gas plan.
There's also a toggle at the top of the rates table to swap between ‘electricity’ and ‘gas’ plan results.
How to use the SA electricity and gas plans rates table
The rates table above is set to show our database's plans for SA 5000, the results filtered according to the presets below:
- Lowest to highest estimated annual price
- Single-rate or flat-rate tariffs
- No solar panels installed (only for electricity plans).
You can choose between the built-in filters below to better match your personal preferences:
- Single rate, ToU or controlled load tariffs (for electricity only)
- Monthly, quarterly or estimated cost.
In addition, you can sort the results based on the following orders:
- Estimated price (ascending or descending)
- Provider names alphabetically (ascending or descending)
- Feature rating (ascending to descending)
- Reference price comparison (for electricity only).
Other tariffs in Adelaide that aren't included on our rates table include:
- Demand tariff (electricity only): An extra ‘demand’ charge followed by standard supply and usage charges. To apply for a demand tariff, you will need a smart meter installed.

What to consider with the cheapest electricity and gas plans in Adelaide, SA
Bundled electricity and gas discounts
Providers selling both electricity and gas plans typically offer bundled discounts. However, you could potentially save more by signing up for an electricity and gas plan from two separate providers. Always check which is the cheaper option first.
Your electricity and gas use
When you use the most electricity
- If you use more electricity during off-peak hours, a ToU tariff or demand tariff will be cheaper in the long run.
- If you use more electricity during peak hours, a single rate tariff will save you more.
- If you have an energy-intensive appliance (e.g. a hot water system), a controlled load tariff can meter that appliance separately at a cheaper rate, but expect limited hours of operation.
How much electricity or gas you use
- If you don’t use a lot of electricity, lower supply rates will save you more over time.
- If you don’t use a lot of gas, a flat rate tariff will be cheaper than a block rate tariff, where low volume use incurs cheaper usage rates.
For a quick overview, you can estimate your potential savings from switching to the cheapest electricity plan (on our database) using our electricity bill calculator. However, you'll need to have your latest power bill on hand to get an accurate estimation.
Contract length and expiries
There are two energy contract types — ongoing and contracts with a fixed contract length.
Ongoing plans have no expiry, meaning customers are free to switch providers or plans at any time.
A plan with a fixed contract length has a set expiry date, where terminating it prematurely will incur penalty fees (e.g. exit fees).
Once a plan expires, a provider will typically transfer you to its standing offer (for electricity) or standing contract (for gas).
Standing offers and contracts in SA take after the state’s reference price. Generally, this reflects the maximum price a retailer is comfortable with charging their customers, and does not come with any value-added features (discounts).
If you find yourself moved to a standing offer or contract, you may pay hundreds of dollars more annually when compared to your old plan.
Before signing up for any plan, you can inspect its contract length under the ‘contract details’ section on its BPID. This is accessible on our journey’s results page by clicking the ‘basic plan information’ or ‘plan details’ prompt under each plan.
If the plan you’re interested in has a fixed contract length, set a calendar reminder to switch energy plans days before its expiry date.
Variable vs fixed rates
Almost all energy plans in the market share a variable-rate structure. That means providers are permitted to change them at any time— this applies to plans that are ongoing or with fixed contract lengths.
However, you must be notified in writing at least five business days before any changes take place.
If the cheapest electricity or gas plans in Adelaide have variable rates, their annual estimated costs may rise. That’s why it is important to stay on top of all written communications from your retailer (e.g. mail, emails).
In comparison, fixed-rate plans lock in rates for a specified contract length. However, this rate structure is quite rare.
An energy plan’s rate structure is clearly outlined under the ‘billing and price details’ section on its BPID.
Hidden fees
Before hastily switching to a cheaper plan, scrutinise your existing plan’s BPID for any hidden fees (e.g. exit fees) — you do not want to be caught off guard by additional charges.
