What is trailer insurance?
Trailer insurance is a type of car insurance policy that covers damage to your trailer following an insured event, such as an accident, fire, or theft. Trailer insurance provides cover for work trailers, caravans, campervans, horse floats, and similar towed vehicles.
While trailer insurance isn’t typically an essential requirement, it can often provide valuable peace of mind, especially if you regularly use a trailer, such as when working on a jobs site, camping or travelling.
What types of trailer insurance are available?
Similarly to car insurance policies, there are several types of trailer insurance available:
- Third party property damage: Covers damage to other cars and property caused by your trailer in an accident
- Third party fire and theft: Covers damage to other cars and property caused by your trailer in an accident, as well as damage to or loss of your own trailer if it catches on fire or is stolen
- Comprehensive: Covers damage to other vehicles and property, fire, theft, and damage to your trailer in case of accidents.
Do I need insurance for my trailer?
Unlike cars and other vehicles, you aren’t required by law to take out Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance on a trailer. Provided your trailer is being towed by a registered vehicle, it will likely be covered by that vehicle’s CTP policy, but it’s worth checking with your insurer to confirm.
However, once a trailer is detached from a vehicle—such as when you arrive at a camp or job site—you may be at risk if your unattached trailer experiences an insured event.. Taking out separate optional trailer insurance may provide extra peace of mind, as well as cover for circumstances that other policies may not typically include.
