Pay-by-the-month car insurance

As living costs continue to squeeze household budgets, more motorists may be looking into pay-by-the-month car insurance policies in order to better budget for the cost of their premiums.

Paying for your car insurance annually as a lump sum may not be ideal for everyone’s budget. Some insurance providers offer the option to pay monthly, which can be a lot kinder on household budgets as the premium is spread out over 12 months. The downside is that you may be charged more overall to pay for car insurance in this way.

On the plus side, not all providers charge extra for monthly car insurance payments. There are some providers out there (like the ones listed in the comparison table above) that allow you to pay on a monthly basis without adding to the cost for that convenience. You can use the table above to compare car insurance policies with the option to pay monthly at no extra cost. You should also read any relevant policy documentation, such as the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD), for any policy you are considering.

How much is a monthly car insurance policy?

The cost of a pay-by-the-month car insurance policy will ultimately depend on certain factors such as:

  • The type of policy (e.g. comprehensive, Third Party Fire and Theft or Third Party Property Damage) and level of coverage you choose
  • The personal details of the driver/s listed on your policy (e.g. their age, gender and driving and claims history)
  • The make and model of the vehicle you are insuring
  • Your address, including where the vehicle will be parked both during the day and at night
  • The excess listed in your policy.

Your provider may also allow you to change your basic excess. A higher excess amount will often lead to lower premiums being charged, but it’s important to remember that you would need to pay this higher amount if you need to make a claim.
