Supermarket prices have been under the microscope lately and now Woolworths has slugged Aussies with another price rise, this time to its Delivery Unlimited subscription.

The delivery subscription, which gives shoppers unlimited $0 delivery for orders over $75, is increasing fees from $15 to $17 monthly and $119 to $149 annually.

Woolworths reportedly sent subscribers an email last week informing them of the changes, which came into effect this week.

This is the first time in over five years that Woolworths has increased the cost of Delivery Unlimited. A Woolworths spokesperson told Canstar the supermarket was adjusting the price to ensure they could continue to provide fast and reliable service for shoppers.

“We are continuing to roll out thousands more delivery and pick-up windows throughout the week across the country to give customers even more convenience when it comes to their weekly shop,” they said.

While an extra $2 a month, or $30 a year doesn’t sound like a budget killer, this increase is another rung added to the growing cost-of-living ladder.

Canstar’s Consumer Editor Meagan Lawrence says Aussies are feeling the pressure at the checkout.

“Our research shows that after housing costs, groceries are the biggest financial concern for Aussies right now,” she said.

“You can make simple switches to claw back savings though. We know that a family of four could save up to $2,424 by switching half of their grocery list to homebrand products.

“Choosing frozen veggies, which are typically about half the price of the fresh version, will also help you save. And of course review your supermarket subscriptions. If the monthly fee isn’t adding up anymore, it’s time to ditch it.”

Is a supermarket subscription worth it?

Whether or not a paid supermarket membership is worth it depends on your budget and lifestyle. Woolworths, Coles and Costco all have subscription models that offer different benefits at different price points.

Do the maths before signing up. Make sure the perks outweigh the costs and that you'll realistically be able to use the service frequently enough to get your money's worth.
