It’s the kitchen debate argued countless times over the toastie maker: should a toastie be sliced into triangles or rectangles?
New research from Canstar has taken a crack at settling it — at least for now. Canstar’s survey of more than 1,000 Australians has revealed the preferred cut to toasties is definitely diagonal with:
- 65% preferring triangle, while
- 35% voting rectangle.
What’s inside counts too
For preferred filings, classic combinations continue to dominate, with cheese holding its place as the undisputed hero of the toastie world. The top fillings were:
- Ham, cheese and tomato - 31%
- Ham and cheese - 22%
- Cheese - 15%
- Chicken and avocado - 12%
- Nutella - 4%
The appliance Aussies back for the job
Making the perfect toastie happen is impossible if you don’t have the right tool, and when it comes to what works best, Aussies have decided.
Russell Hobbs has won Canstar’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Award for Grills and Sandwich Presses, earning high ratings across all categories from Australian consumers, including value for money, performance, design, features and functionality, and ease of use.
Canstar spokesperson, Eden Radford, says, “Toasties might be simple, but that doesn’t mean Australians are any less serious about how they make them, and in particular, how they cut them.
“While classic combos like ham, cheese and tomato are dominating the sandwich presses around the country, our research shows that when it comes to cutting them up, team triangle has the majority vote.
“For the right appliance to help get the job done, Australians have rated Russell Hobbs as number one for customer satisfaction, with the brand earning top ratings across all categories for its sandwich press.
“Whether firmly team triangle or rigidly rectangle, settled on sweet or sticking to savoury, we might all have our preferences, but there’s no denying how much we all love a toastie, no matter how it’s cut, or what’s inside.”
