Australia is a nation of clean freaks, and new Canstar research proves it — at least when it comes to keeping our floors in top shape.
According to the research, 90% of Australians vacuum at least once a week, and a dedicated 16% vacuum every day.
The survey of over 1,400 Australians who recently purchased a vacuum cleaner comes as Canstar announces the 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Awards for Vacuums, with Dyson winning in the stick category, Miele for barrel & upright, and Roborock for robot vacuums.
Stick vacs most popular, shoppers focus on getting a good deal
Stick vacuums remain the most popular type with 42% owning one, followed by traditional barrel and upright models (18%), while 12% own a robot model.
The average spend on a new vacuum cleaner is $452, with close to half (46%) buying their vacuum on sale and typically replacing an older model after an average of five years. The data also showed:
- Over one-third (37%) bought a model with multiple attachments,
- 16% picked a vacuum specifically designed for pet hair,
- 11% opted for a model with a HEPA allergy filter,
- 62% regularly clean their vacuum cleaner.
Robot love
As the technology and capabilities of robot vacuum cleaners has expanded in recent years, so has the impact they have had in the home. According to Canstar’s survey of those who own a robot vacuum cleaner:
- 35% say it’s the best home cleaning appliance they have ever purchased,
- 23% would never go back to a regular vacuum cleaner.
Top-rated vacuum cleaners named
The winners of Canstar’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Awards for Vacuums has been announced, with analysis of customer feedback showing performance was the primary driver of customer satisfaction across all three categories, followed closely by features and functionality.
Canstar’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Award Winners for Vacuum Cleaners:
- Stick Vacuums: Dyson
- Barrel & Upright Vacuums: Miele
- Robot: Roborock
Canstar’s consumer expert, Eden Radford, says “Whether they use a robot, a stick, or a traditional barrel vacuum cleaner, Canstar’s data shows us Australians are fastidious when it comes to keeping their homes dust free.
“While stick vacuums remain the top pick, robot vacuums are fast winning over households. Over a third of robot vacuum owners call it their best appliance purchase, and nearly a quarter vow never to go back to a manual unit.
“Congratulations to Dyson, Miele, and Roborock for taking out Canstar’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Awards. Our analysis shows overall performance and functionality drive customer satisfaction far more than flashy design.
“Buying the right model is only half the battle, however, with ongoing maintenance where customers could get the best in longevity. Nearly two-fifths of Aussies aren't regularly cleaning their vacuum, which risks cutting suction and lifespan short.
“Simple habits like emptying the bin early, washing filters, and clearing hair from the roller keep your machine running efficiently so you get full value from your spend.”
