Jetstar launches new loyalty membership: is it worth the cost?
Following big changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program this year, travellers now have a new way to earn rewards and status credits through flights on Qantas’ partner airline, Jetstar.
The new Club Jetstar Extras membership allows members to collect bonus points and up to 75 status credits per year when they book a flight through the budget airline. However, at a cost of $199 a year on top of the standard Club Jetstar membership fee, you may get more value out of the base membership, depending on how often you fly.
How does Club Jetstar Extras work?
What it is: Club Jetstar Extras is a paid add-on for Club Jetstar members to earn Qantas points and status credits on Jetstar flights.
Who can sign up: Customers must be Club Jetstar and Qantas Frequent Flyer members.
How it works: Club Jetstar Extras members receive points and status credits on bookings though Jetstar. Members must be signed in and enter their Qantas Frequent Flyer number.
Reward points benefits: Receive bonus Qantas points for Jetstar flights at 50% of the Discount Economy earn rate. This is uncapped and in addition to any points earned through a bundle fare.
Status Credits benefits: Receive 5 status credits for eligible domestic flights and 10 for eligible international flights booked through Jetstar. Maximum of 75 per year.
Cost: $199 for Club Jetstar Extras, plus $65 for Club Jetstar + $55 membership renewal yearly, plus $99.50 Qantas Frequent Flyer membership.
Pro tip: You might be able to avoid the Qantas Frequent Flyer fee if you’re an Everyday Rewards member or have a Qantas credit card.
How many extra points can you earn?
Club Jetstar Extras members earn bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer points, calculated at 50% of the lowest standard points earn category (Discount Economy).
Your Qantas points are calculated on two main factors:
- Your ticket: This is determined by the Fare Type (like a flexible ticket vs. a cheap sale ticket) and your Travel Class (Economy, Premium Economy, Business, etc.). These two factors place you into an earn category.
- Your destination: The length of your flight, combined with your earn category, determines the final number of points you receive.
Essentially, more expensive tickets (like business class or flexible economy fares) and longer flights earn you more points.
Here are a few examples of the bonus points you could earn:
- Melbourne to Sydney: 400 points
- Sydney to Perth: 725 points
- Sydney to Tokyo: 1,300 points
Is Club Jetstar Extras worth it?
Whether Club Jetstar Extras is worth it for you will likely depend on how much you value the benefits that come with a higher Qantas status tier–the higher the tier, the better benefits, like lounge access and priority boarding.
Keep in mind, extra reward points alone may not outweigh the cost of your membership, particularly after a major devaluing of Qantas Points earlier this year.
The value of 1,000 points now sits just under $20 when redeemed on an international long-haul flight; one of the most efficient uses. At this rate, you would need to earn around 10,000 points from Jetstar flights in a year to cover the cost of your Club Jetstar Extras membership. With a 50% earn rate, this could be a challenge for even the most seasoned travellers.

|---|---|
| Departing Sydney to: | Value |

| Long-haul international flight (London) | $19.35 |

London is flying into Heathrow, and Melbourne is to Tullamarine.
Can bonus status credits boost your Qantas tier?
Yes, bonus status credits from Club Jetstar Extras can help you achieve or maintain a higher Qantas tier (like Silver or Gold).
Status credits determine your membership level. As an Extras member, you earn five status credits for eligible domestic Jetstar flights and 10 status credits for international flights.
This bonus is useful because it lets regular travellers save money by flying the cheaper Jetstar route without completely sacrificing their Qantas status progression.
However, the benefit is limited: you can only earn a maximum of 75 bonus Status Credits per year. Since the lowest status tier (Silver) requires 300 Status Credits to earn (and 250 to keep), these bonus credits alone are not enough. They serve as a helpful top-up but may need to be combined with flying on Qantas or purchasing higher-fare Jetstar tickets to reach an actual tier.
Should you upgrade to Club Jetstar Extras?
The value of the upgrade depends on how often you fly. Most average flyers may find better value in the base Club Jetstar membership without needing to invest in the Extras option.
For example, a single person flying two return trips per year could easily save more than the $65 cost–or $55 annual renewal–of the base fee through membership benefits. One you add on the $199 Extras fee, it becomes difficult to claw back those savings if you’re still only flying twice a year.
