How many people do we survey for our Victoria electricity ratings?

Canstar surveyed 1,160 Victorian residents with an electricity account who pay their bills about their experience with their energy retailer. Market research company PureProfile manages the survey on Canstar’s behalf.

How do we rate Victorian electricity providers?

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their electricity provider from zero to 10, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and 10 is extremely satisfied. Respondents rate how satisfied they are with their providers in the following areas: Value for money Customer service: e.g. email, telephone service. Bill and cost clarity: i.e. do you understand your bill? Online tools and advice: e.g. apps to monitor usage, account management. Ease of sign-up

The winning brand receives the highest overall rating once all the scores from each category are combined and averaged.

There’s no one ‘best’ electricity plan in Victoria, as different people have different energy needs. That said, things to consider when comparing plans include: How a plan’s annual estimated cost compares to the reference price. The usage charge per kilowatt hour (kWh) and daily supply charge. Whether those charges are variable or fixed for a specific term. If the plan includes a guaranteed or conditional bill discount. How many electricity providers operate in Victoria?

There are five electricity distribution networks in Victoria and over 20 energy retailers offering residential electricity plans.

Do electricity providers offer the same prices across Victoria?

No. Your energy bill will be different based on your location, as distribution costs vary between networks. This means, the price of an AGL plan on the Citipower network will be different from the price of that same plan on the Powercor network. Victoria is serviced by five electricity distributors: CitiPower: Network covers central Melbourne and inner suburbs. Jemena: Network covers North West Melbourne. Powercor: Network covers Melbourne’s CBD and inner suburbs, Melbourne’s western suburbs, central and western Victoria. AusNet Services: Network covers eastern Victoria as well as the outer northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne. United Energy: Network covers southern Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.

1. Alinta Energy

Alinta Energy is the winner of the 2026 Victorian Most Satisfied Customers award for electricity providers.

Alinta Energy is one of the largest dual fuel providers in the southern states of Australia, as well as a major gas supplier in Western Australia. When it comes to VIC, Alinta offers competitive rates and no conditional discounts. The retailer also brings savings on various activities (e.g. movie tickets) to its customers through the Alinta Energy rewards program.

Owned by Hydro Tasmania, Momentum Energy was one of the first retailers to help simplify the retail market in Australia by keeping its products free from conditional discounts. The Melbourne-based retailer markets itself as the brand with great rates but no confusing discounts. Momentum Energy offers several residential market offers in VIC, with varying rates but no exit fees. This year, Momentum Energy earned second place for overall satisfaction. It especially excelled in the customer service and ease of sign-up categories.

A six-time winner of our Victorian electricity provider rating, Powershop offers customers competitive rates and helpful tools to monitor their power usage, including an online platform and Powershop smartphone app. Previously, Powershop allowed customers to pre-purchase energy, but now offers a simplified postpaid approach to billing. When it comes to its plans, Powershop offers reasonable rates, which include 100% of your usage carbon offset at no extra cost. Powershop received third place for overall satisfaction, earning a high score in the online tools and advice category. .

4. Red Energy

Red Energy keeps things simple with a small range of variable-rate market offers at competitive prices. One of Red Energy’s key points of difference is its Qantas Red plan, which gives customers bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer points upon sign-up and for paying on time. All of Red Energy’s plans come with no contract terms or exit fees. Red Energy places fourth for overall customer satisfaction, but it performed exceptionally well in the bill and cost clarity category.

Tango Energy is the retail arm of renewable power generation company Pacific Hydro. Tango primarily operates in Victoria, providing customers with a small selection of market offers. Tango offers plans with variable rates and does not include any conditional discounts, just competitive usage and supply rates, often in exchange for online communications and direct debit payments. Tango Energy sits in fifth place in our shortlist for overall satisfaction.

6. OVO Energy

Hailing from the UK, OVO Energy is an energy retailer that services New South Wales, Queensland, VIC and South Australia, with a proactive commitment towards renewable energy. Some of OVO Energy’s plans boast unique incentives, such as three hours of free electricity in the day. OVO Energy ranks in sixth place for overall satisfaction.

Utilities giant AGL has undertaken a major review of its plans, moving away from conditional discounts and fixed rates to reasonably low variable rates instead. It offers several plans in VIC, all of which come with access to AGL Rewards, the retailer’s loyalty program that delivers various value-added benefits. AGL comes in at seventh place for overall satisfaction.

Last year’s winner of our Victorian electricity provider rating, Lumo Energy provides gas and electricity services across VIC and SA.

Lumo Energy offers Victorians a small range of market offers that currently feature variable rates (although fixed-rate deals are occasionally available). Benefits include no standard connection and disconnection fees for those moving homes, and a rewards program offering discounts from a wide range of retailers. Lumo Energy came in at eighth place for overall satisfaction, but it earned its highest score in the bill and cost clarity category.

One of Australia’s biggest energy retailers, Origin Energy offers Victorian customers several plans, all of which include variable rates. Specific market offers also include extras such as Allianz Emergency Home Assistance and bonus Everyday Rewards points. These plans come with no contract terms or exit fees. Origin also has one specific deal for customers with solar panels. Origin Energy earned ninth place for overall satisfaction, but it is the second brand in our shortlist to earn a high score in the online tools and advice category.

GloBird Energy has emerged as one of the main ‘second-tier’ challengers to Australia’s power giants, AGL, Origin and EnergyAustralia. GloBird focuses on attractive prices and big savings, which it mainly does through low rates and conditional discounts. In addition to supplying electricity, the retailer also offers natural gas in VIC, as well as in the other eastern states. GloBird Energy comes in at 11th place for overall satisfaction.
