If you’re worried about being without transport after an accident, you may want to consider a car insurance policy that offers to cover the cost of a rental car while yours is out of action. Many insurers offer this type of cover (if the accident is not your fault) as part of their standard comprehensive or fire and theft car insurance, or may offer it as an optional extra that you can add on to your policy for an extra fee. The table at the top of this page shows some policy options that include not-at-fault accident car rental. (Some insurers also offer the option of adding on at-fault hire car cover, which could help with the costs of temporary transport even if you are at fault in an accident.)
But be aware that often only part of the hire car costs may be covered under these types of policies. Although some insurance providers may cover the full cost, many policies only cover up to a certain amount of the car hire costs per day or only cover a specific number of days, even if the time needed to repair your vehicle exceeds that limit.
If the accident is not your fault, you may also be asked to provide the details of the at-fault driver, such as name, address and the vehicle registration number.
