How do speed tiers impact your NBN bill?
There are a wide range of different NBN speed tiers on offer, with the speed plan you choose determining how much you pay as faster speed tiers will cost more than the slower speeds. While looking at the average NBN price is a good guide for you to consider if you’re setting a budget, you might be better off finding which speed tier you want first, and comparing prices for that speed to help better determine a good NBN plan for you.
Our 2025 research found that the most popular speed tier was NBN 50, with 25% of respondents signing up to a plan on this speed tier, followed by 18% on NBN 25. However, 30% of respondents stated they were unsure which speed tier their plan was on. If you don’t know which speed tier you're on, it’s easy to find out via your account or bill from your internet provider. Knowing your current speed tier can help you work out if you are paying too much for a speed you don’t need, or if that speed is slower than what your household requires.

What is the average internet bill for other internet types?
If you’re looking at other types of home internet, you can see what the average monthly cost was for home wireless and mobile broadband in 2025 below.
Home wireless broadband average internet bill
Based on survey results from our 2025 Most Satisfied Customer rating for home wireless broadband, the average internet bill for home wireless broadband was around $73 per month ($876 per year), up from $71 per month in 2024.
One of the more popular NBN alternatives, home wireless broadband (sometimes referred to as home wireless, 5G home internet or 4G home internet) can be a slightly cheaper alternative to NBN. What you’ll pay can depend on whether you choose 5G or 4G internet, along with your plan’s data inclusions and any speed caps.
Mobile broadband average internet bill
Using research from our Most Satisfied Customers ratings for mobile broadband in 2025, the average monthly cost for a mobile broadband bill was around $57 per month ($684 per year), down from $64 per month in 2024.
Mobile broadband is similar to home wireless in that it uses a mobile network to access the internet. However, mobile broadband is more portable, and is often offered via a data-only SIM card that can be used in a portable modem, dongle, tablet or even a smartphone. Some mobile broadband plans will include a dongle or modem, while others might just be the SIM card.
What can impact your internet bill?
While the average internet prices are a useful guide if you’re setting a budget, how much you pay for your internet plan can be affected by the following:
- Speeds: While NBN plans will be priced by speed, with faster speed tiers more expensive, home wireless and mobile broadband plans will also be priced on speed — 4G internet plans are typically cheaper, while uncapped 5G internet plans tend to be more expensive.
- Data inclusion: While most NBN plans and home wireless plans include unlimited data by default, mobile broadband plans have a range of data caps which will determine how much you pay for your plan.
- Add ons and extras: Providers will typically offer extras such as modems and phone lines for an additional cost which can impact your upfront or monthly cost. Adding a lot of extras to your plan can make your internet costs creep up.
- Discounts: Some providers offer discounts on your plan fees, often for a set amount of time like six months — this will reduce your monthly price but only for a limited time, so compare the standard pricing before signing up to a plan.
All in all, choosing the best NBN plan for your household should be a balance between cost and choosing a plan with a good internet speed for your home.
It’s important to assess your home’s internet needs before shopping around for an internet plan — you don’t want to end up underpaying or overpaying for a plan that’s slower or faster than you really need.
