The latest Hotel Price Index (HPI) from Hotels.com has revealed a list of 18 holiday destinations around the world where the average cost of 5-star accommodation was under $200/night for Aussies in 2016.

While the list featured a handful of offerings from Europe and nearby New Zealand, it was dominated by Asian destinations.

Siem Reap in Cambodia took out the top spot for affordability with an average price of $140/night.

It was closely followed by Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia ($143/night), Pattaya in Thailand ($163/night), and Istanbul in Turkey ($170/night).

Hotels.com Marketing Manager for Australia and New Zealand, David Spasovic, said luxury hotels don’t have to be extremely pricey if you’re a smart traveller.

“The Hotels.com Hotel Price Index showcases exotic and culturally-rich destinations around the world where Aussies are spoilt for choice when it comes to luxury accommodation on a lemonade budget,” said Spasovic.

The HPI’s list of most affordable 5-star destinations also featured a handful of local cities, including Brisbane ($173/night), Adelaide ($179/night), Canberra ($192/night), Cairns ($197/night), and Perth ($198/night).

Which country is most expensive for 5-star accommodation?

The HPI also compiled a list of destinations where Australians paid the most per night for 5-star accommodation, and it really makes you appreciate the price tags of the cheaper destinations!

The list featured several North American destinations, but European destinations also featured heavily on the list of pricey holiday spots.

The dearest holiday spot was Anaheim, California over in the United States, costing a painful average of $870/night.

It was followed up by Mykonos in Greece ($622/night), Cancun in Mexico ($598/night), and Florence in Italy ($570/night).
