What is the fastest internet in Australia?
The fastest internet in Australia can typically be found on the NBN, with fast NBN plans capable of up to 2000 megabits per second (Mbps)/2 gigabits per second (Gbps) speeds. Other non-NBN fibre networks may offer similarly fast speeds.
5G home internet can also offer fast internet to your home, with theoretical speeds up to 20Gbps, although real-world performance is currently up to 1000Mbps/1Gbps speeds. The 5G speeds on these plans may also be more unreliable, as they depend on the 5G mobile network connection available to you, your network coverage and whether the plan has a speed cap in place.
Other non-fixed internet types, like satellite Sky Muster NBN and Starlink plans, may also have speed caps or an unreliable performance when compared to a fixed-line internet connection.
What are the fastest NBN plans?
The fastest NBN speed currently available is NBN 2000 — also known as ‘Home Hyperfast’. This is also the most expensive speed tier and is suited to larger households, or households that do a lot of intensive activities (for example, concurrent 4K/8K video streams, or downloading and uploading large files such as game downloads).
This speed tier offers a maximum of 2000Mbps download speeds and either 100Mbps upload speeds for homes with a Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection, or up to 200Mbps upload speeds for homes with a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection.
Not all NBN providers offer this super-fast speed tier. Some providers offering the fastest NBN plans on the NBN 2000 speed tier include:
- Aussie Broadband
- Elevate
- GoodTel
- Leaptel
- Mate
- MyOwn Tel
- Superloop
NBN 1000 (Home Ultrafast) is the second fastest speed tier, which offers a similar super-fast performance to the Home Hyperfast speed and is more widely available than NBN 2000. The Home Superfast (NBN 750) and Home Fast II (NBN 500) speeds are also good options for large households with high intensity internet usage needs. Keep in mind that these NBN speeds are only available to homes connected with the fastest NBN technology types — FTTP and some HFC connections.
For homes with a Fibre to the Building (FTTB), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) or Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection type, an NBN 100 plan may offer the fastest available speeds, followed by the NBN 50 speed tier.
Fastest NBN plans by typical evening speed
A typical evening speed is listed alongside NBN plans as a way of showing how a provider’s plans perform during the busy evening peak (between 7pm and 11pm). While a plan’s performance will differ between households, using this plan speed measurement can offer a clearer picture of which NBN plans are likely to be the fastest.
Currently Mate and Aussie Broadband are offering some of the fastest typical evening speeds for NBN 2000 plans in Canstar's database, with typical speeds listed over 1800Mbps.
What is the fastest NBN technology?
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is generally considered the fastest type of NBN in Australia, as it involves a fibre-optic cable running directly to your property, where it is met with a connection box. This is different to other NBN connection types where the fibre-optic cables only go as far as the local node, where existing copper wiring completes the journey to your home.
Some homes with FTTN and FTTC connections are eligible for an upgrade to a FTTP connection as part of NBN Co’s free fibre upgrade program.
Fastest NBN providers in Australia
With fast internet plans more widely available, looking at the typical evening speeds is a good way of differentiating between plans and providers. NBN plans will come with a typical evening speed listed, so you have an idea how fast that plan usually is between the busy hours of 7pm and 11pm.
While real-world performance will differ between households, using the typical evening speed as a guide can help you compare the best internet plans for you.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) releases a quarterly report tracking the evening speeds of some of Australia’s biggest and most popular NBN providers. These reports serve as a general guide as to how often providers deliver their plan’s maximum advertised speeds, with a higher percentage indicating a ‘better’ or ‘faster’ performance.
Here are the fast NBN providers during the busy evening peak hours, according to the latest ACCC report published in December 2025 (with data recorded in September-October 2025).
- Optus: 103.7%
- Exetel: 103.4%
- TPG: 102.8%
- Leaptel: 102.7%
- iiNet: 100.6%
- Superloop: 100.1%
- Dodo & iPrimus: 98.3%
- Telstra: 97.5%
- Aussie Broadband: 96.3%
Essentially, this means that out of the biggest Australian providers, Optus was technically rated ‘the best’, as its plans were more likely to achieve their maximum performance speeds. Previously, providers including Telstra, Exetel, TPG and Optus had each held the top spot in past reports, demonstrating that performance can change month to month.
The ACCC report is a helpful guide to see which fast internet providers typically deliver the fastest NBN speeds. However, keep in mind that there are still many variables that impact speeds and it is not a determinant for what your experience will be.
What are the fastest 5G home internet plans?
5G was once thought of as a major competitor to the NBN, thanks to its potential super-fast speeds. However, 5G mobile networks are still being rolled out across the country, so access to these speeds may not be available everywhere.
Accessing these fast speeds may also be dependent on a range of things, such as where your home is and how strong the coverage is. Some 5G home internet plans may also have speed caps around 50Mbps or 100Mbps — depending on the plan or provider — so you may not actually experience speeds faster than what’s available on NBN connections. Uncapped speed plans from providers including Optus, Telstra and Yomojo may offer typical speeds around 200Mbps to 300Mbps.
If you’re considering 5G as an NBN alternative, keep in mind that you’ll need to check coverage in your area before signing up. After all, there’s no point in having a 5G-capable modem and plan if you don’t have the network available to you.
How fast is my internet?
Knowing what internet plan you’re on, and therefore what speeds you should have, can give you an idea of how fast your internet is. You can also cross check your plan on your internet provider’s website to see what speed tier and typical evening speeds to expect.
You may wish to run an internet speed test using one of the many free speed test tools available. This will show you how fast your internet currently is in Mbps, and give you an idea of how well your plan is performing.
