FAQs about Canstar's solar installers award
Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customers Awards recognise companies with the most satisfied customers overall based on consumer surveys.
Canstar surveyed 1,659 Australian residents with a solar electricity account who pay their bills about their experience with their solar installer.
Market research company PureProfile manages the survey on Canstar’s behalf.
Respondents rate their satisfaction with their gas provider from zero to 10, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and 10 is extremely satisfied. Respondents rate how satisfied they are with their providers in the following areas:
- Overall satisfaction: Measured consumer satisfaction with a solar installer as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
- Customer service and advice provided: The solar installer had multiple service points for customers, e.g. telephone, email, online chat and helped customers determine their solar needs.
- Performance of solar system: The solar installer provided products that performed to its needs or greater.
- Installation process: The solar installer had a smooth and simple installation process for customers.
- Durability: The solar installer provided products that were durable and performed to its needs, even in extenuating circumstances.
- Set-up cost: The solar installer had a decent cost for the services and products provided.
The winning brand receives the highest overall rating once all the scores from each category are combined and averaged.
Canstar also gives Star Ratings to top performing financial products, and Outstanding Value Awards to providers with a range of high-performing products. Canstar’s Innovation Excellence Awards also showcase products and services that break new ground when it comes to helping customers.
Canstar rates products and services over a range of consumer categories, in addition to financial services.

If you are a beginner when it comes to installing solar there are a few things you’ll need to keep in consideration. The type of system you’ll be able to get will depend strongly on factors such as your roof size and style, household positioning and your personal budget. It’s your solar installer’s job to assess your roof and lay out your options in the form of a quote. And with most solar installers offering different options at different price points, it’s not always crystal-clear which installer to go for.
As part of our ratings report, we asked survey respondents to share what the biggest deciding factors were for them when picking their solar installer. We’ve listed these below:
- 40% said they picked based on the quality of solar panels and parts on offer from the retailer.
- 40% said they chose an installer based on the price offered.
- 14% said they went for a retailer with good customer service.
- 6% listed another reason why they picked their installer.
Most Australians are by now well aware of the advantages of solar power. That said, it’s not necessarily a good investment for everyone. If you’re yet to install solar, here are a few key points to consider:
- Location: Households in sunnier areas such as the NT, QLD, WA and parts of NSW stand to benefit the most from solar panels. Most areas of VIC and SA can also be suitable for solar power, provided they receive favourable weather.
- System size: Picking the right sized solar system will depend on how you plan to use it. Consider your rates, how much electricity your property uses, and if you’re eligible for a feed-in tariff (FiT). If you’re on the fence about what system size you should choose, you might want to opt for a small (and cheaper) one – you can always upsize in the future. To give you some idea, we’ve found 5kW and 6kW systems to be the most popular with survey respondents.
- The cost: The hefty price tag is undoubtedly the biggest barrier to installing solar. While the price of solar is generally coming down, even the most basic system will set you back a few thousand dollars.
