The best gas supplier in VIC
The brands rated are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.
1. Red Energy

This is the third time Red Energy has taken home the trophy in Victoria since Canstar’s gas supplier awards began in 2015. Owned by renewable energy generation company Snowy Hydro, Red Energy’s main selling point is its partnership with Qantas, which sees customers on a Qantas Red Saver plan pocket frequent flyer points for paying their energy bill. All of Red Energy’s rates are currently variable, so you’ll have to watch out for any unexpected price changes.
2. Dodo Power and Gas

Dodo is best known as a telco provider, but in recent years has moved into offering electricity and gas deals. Victorian customers can choose from Dodo’s market or standing offer gas plans, which are available without contracts or exit fees. Dodo was rated second in Canstar's 2024 Most Satisfied Customers award for gas providers in Victoria.
3. Sumo Energy

Sumo Energy is an Australian-owned and operated electricity, gas and internet retailer, known for its bundled offers that reward customers the more services they sign up for (e.g. customers who sign up for electricity and gas plans may be eligible for a bill credit). Sumo’s natural gas services are available in NSW and VIC, with each plan offering customers a variable rate. Sumo came third in the 2024 Most Satisfied Customers award for gas providers in Victoria.
4. AGL

Energy giant AGL gives Victorians one main market gas offer, featuring variable rates and no lock-in contract. This flagship plan also comes with flexible billing options, and AGL frequently offers new customers sign-up credits for switching to electricity or gas plans online. Another big selling point for AGL is its ‘value add’ incentives, including access to AGL Rewards. AGL placed fourth in Victoria's 2024 Most Satisfied Customers award for gas providers.
5. Origin Australia

Origin Energy typically has a few gas offers for Victorian households to pick from, depending on personal preferences and circumstances. The retailer offers variable rate plans, with one product even going as far as awarding Everyday Rewards points. For those who prefer to do nothing other than pay their bills, Origin also has a gas plan with no discounts, just competitive rates with an ongoing benefit period and no lock-in contract. Origin was rated fifth in Canstar's 2024 Most Satisfied Customers award in Victoria for gas providers.
6. EnergyAustralia

EnergyAustralia is Australia’s third-largest energy retailer, serving 1.6 million customers in east Australia. While EnergyAustralia is renowned for its electricity plans, it also offers a suite of gas plans with competitive variable and supply usage rates, and occasionally, sign-up offers in the form of bill credits and discounts. There’s no one ‘best’ gas plan in Victoria, as different plans will benefit different people’s energy needs. That said, things to consider when comparing plans include:
- What type of contract does the provider offer?
- What is the contract length and are there any exit fees?
- How much are the supply and usage charges?
- What discount is available and what are the conditions?
- What other incentives/rewards are offered?
There are three gas distribution networks and 16 energy retailers offering residential gas plans in Victoria.
Natural gas prices are charged in cents per megajoule (the unit of measurement for gas). Peak-time gas usage rates typically cost between 2.5 cents and 3 cents per megajoule. To put this into perspective, your gas oven probably uses around 12 megajoules an hour.
If you have a time-of-use tariff, the amount you will pay for gas will change depending on the time of day you use it. In Victoria, gas usage may also be broken into daily ‘blocks’, with the first block of power usually costing the most. For example, you could:
- Pay 2.6 cents per megajoule (MJ) for the first 100 megajoules
- Then pay 2.2 cents per megajoule for the next 100 megajoules
- Then pay 1.8 cents per megajoule for the next 100 megajoules
These rates are typical of peak-time gas usage costs. However, you can expect cheaper rates if you use gas at off-peak times.
