FAQs about Canstar's SA gas provider award
Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customers Awards recognise companies with the most satisfied customers overall based on consumer surveys.
Canstar surveyed 310 South Australian residents with a gas account who pay their bills about their experience with their energy retailer.
Market research company PureProfile manages the survey on Canstar’s behalf.
Respondents rate their satisfaction with their gas provider from zero to 10, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and 10 is extremely satisfied. Respondents rate how satisfied they are with their providers in the following areas:
- Overall satisfaction with their gas provider
- Value for money
- Customer service: e.g. email, telephone service.
- Bill and cost clarity: i.e. do you understand your bill?
- Online tools and advice: e.g. apps to monitor usage, account management.
- Ease of sign-up
The winning brand receives the highest overall rating once all the scores from each category are combined and averaged.
Canstar also gives Star Ratings to top performing financial products, and Outstanding Value Awards to providers with a range of high-performing products. Canstar’s Innovation Excellence Awards also showcase products and services that break new ground when it comes to helping customers.
Canstar rates products and services over a range of consumer categories, in addition to financial services.
There’s no one ‘best’ gas plan in SA, as different plans will benefit different people’s energy needs. Things to consider when comparing plans include:
- What type of contract is offered?
- What is the contract length and are there any exit fees?
- How much are the supply and usage charges?
- What discounts are available and what are the conditions?
- What other incentives/rewards are offered?
There are nine energy retailers offering residential gas plans in SA.
SA has only one gas distributor, Australian Gas Networks (formerly Envestra), meaning costs for the same plan will be very similar, if not the same across the state.
States with multiple distributors will likely have varying costs for the same plans, depending on where the customer is located. This is mostly due to a variance in distribution costs across states.
