Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customers Awards recognise companies with the most satisfied customers overall based on consumer surveys.

How many people do we survey for our Queensland electricity ratings?

Canstar surveyed 1,553 Queensland residents with an electricity account who pay their bills about their experience with their energy retailer. Market research company PureProfile manages the survey on Canstar’s behalf.

How do we rate Queensland electricity providers?

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their electricity provider from zero to 10, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and 10 is extremely satisfied. Respondents rate how satisfied they are with their providers in the following areas: Value for money. Customer service: e.g. email, telephone service. Bill and cost clarity: i.e. do you understand your bill? Online tools and advice. Ease of sign-up.

How do we work out the winner?

The winning brand receives the highest overall rating once all the scores from each category are combined and averaged.

What other awards does Canstar give?

What is the best electricity plan in Queensland?

There’s no one ‘best’ electricity plan in Queensland, as different people have different energy needs. That said, things to consider when comparing plans include: How a plan’s annual estimated cost compares to the reference price. The usage charge per kilowatt hour (kWh) and daily supply charge. Whether those charges are variable or fixed for a specific term. If the plan includes a guaranteed or conditional bill discount. Your tariff type–do you need a single rate or time of use tariff, or do you require a controlled load? If there’s benefits for solar owners, such as a feed-in tariff. How many electricity providers operate in Queensland?

There are two electricity distribution networks in Queensland and about 20 energy retailers offering residential electricity plans. Queensland is serviced by two electricity distributors: Energex: Network services Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and surrounds. Ergon Energy: Country and regional Queensland.

1. Red Energy

2025 is the third year in a row Red Energy has won Canstar's Most Satisfied Customers award for electricity providers in Queensland.

Owned by Snowy Hydro, Red Energy has earned a positive reputation for good customer service and well-priced plans. One of its key selling points is its partnership with Qantas, which sees customers collecting Frequent Flyer points for paying their energy bills. The retailer is also one of the few providers to supply electricity and gas in South East Queensland.

Alinta Energy is a major retailer servicing New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, QLD, and Western Australia, acting as the primary challenger to the "Big Three" with highly competitive pricing. Its plans focus on straightforward value with zero exit or lock-in fees, such as its Homedeal Select Plan. It also offers access to exclusive rewards through the Alinta Energy Rewards programs, with points earned on every dollar spent on your power bills. Alinta Energy came in at third place for overall satisfaction.

Customers with solar panels may also be eligible for its solar-specific offering, which could see them earning a higher feed-in tariff on their exported solar. AGL typically has four market offers in QLD, with varying benefits and conditions based on personal preferences. The plans come with variable rates and encourage the use of e-billing. There are no exit fees on any of AGL’s plans and for customers with rooftop panels, the retailer also has a solar deal. Additionally, AGL offers a discounted plan for customers who hold a Seniors Card. AGL placed fifth in our shortlist for overall satisfaction.

Ergon Energy operates as a government-owned distributor and the sole electricity provider for regional Queenslanders, meaning they can’t pick and choose different retailers. Despite limited competition, Ergon currently ranks sixth for overall satisfaction.
