What types of car insurance for under-25 drivers are available in Australia?

There are four main types of car insurance for under 25 year old drivers, as well as all other drivers in Australia:

1. Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance

Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance covers the cost of compensation claims if you harm or fatally injure someone in an accident. You are legally required to have CTP insurance, regardless of which state or territory you live in. It’s included in the cost of your car registration (except in New South Wales where you have to purchase it separately and it’s known as Green Slip insurance).

2. Third party property damage insurance

Third party property damage insurance covers damage to other people’s cars or other property. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle. It’s the most basic form of optional cover.

3. Third party fire and theft insurance

Third party fire and theft covers damage to another driver’s car or property, as well as providing cover for your own car if it’s stolen or suffers damage from fire. It’s also an optional level of cover.

4. Comprehensive insurance

Comprehensive car insurance often provides the highest level of coverage for your car and covers a wider range of circumstances such as accidents, fires, floods, hail and storm damage and theft. It also provides protection for damage to other drivers’ cars and property. It’s generally more expensive than third party property damage cover and third party fire and theft insurance. It’s also an optional cover.

You can compare a range of comprehensive car insurance policies from our Online Partners by using the table at the top of the page.

What’s the best car insurance for under 25s?

As with a driver of any age, the best car insurance for young drivers is the one that best suits your circumstances and budget. For example, you may find that comprehensive insurance is what you need for your brand new car, especially if you are a brand new driver, still unsure on the road. It’s often important to check which insurance policy suits you best, before purchasing.

How to find the best car insurance for under 25s

The easiest way to find the best car insurance for drivers under 25 is to shop around and compare insurance providers and policies. For example, you can use the comparison tool at the top of this page to compare comprehensive car insurance policies from our Online Partners, or filter for policies from the entire Canstar database.

Key points to consider include:

  • It’s advisable to obtain at least three quotes from different car insurance providers, as policy prices can vary considerably.
  • Check the range of excess options. Are there higher limits in place for inexperienced drivers?
  • Always read the car insurance policy document thoroughly, so you fully understand the limits of its cover.
  • Is it possible for you to change your driving habits, or choice of vehicle, to obtain a lower quote?
