Settling in for a movie night has never been easier with streaming services offering seemingly endless options at the click of a button. But with so many choices available, it can be hard to know what to watch, and where to find it. To make it easier, we’ve put together a list of some of the best movies on the top streaming platforms.

KPop Demon Hunters

Demon hunters by day, Kpop superstars at night, this animated Netflix Original follows girl group Huntr/X and their rival boyband—and undercover demons—the Saja Boys. Not to be accused of riding the wave of Kpop supergroups, the film features impressive animation and voice acting, a catchy sound track, and a surprisingly compelling storyline. Kpop Demon Hunters is great for people of all ages, but is a must see for kids and Kpop fans.

Nosferatu

The latest retelling of the Nosferatu story by Robert Eggers is a dark and spine-chilling recreation of the gothic classic. The Film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampiric Count Orlokk, a mysterious nobleman with an unsettling connection to lonely young woman Ellen Hutter, played by Lily-Rose Depp. Known for his impressive set and costume design, Eggars creates an immersive and atmospheric world perfect for a spooky movie night.

Night Always Comes

This fast-paced and anxiety-inducing film follows Vanessa Kirby’s character, Lynette, over a single night as she’s forced to confront her traumatic past in an attempt to find the money to save her family home for her mother and disabled older brother. While not an easy watch, the film features one of Kirby’s best acting performances yet, and is a good pick for anyone looking for a gritty urban thriller.

Wicked

Don’t let the dramatic press tour turn you away, Wicked does the original stage production justice with fantastic musical performances, great set design and special effects, and undeniable chemistry between the female leads. For many, this was the movie of the year in 2024, and with the sequel on the way, now is the perfect time to get on the bandwagon or give it another watch.

Anora

Well deserving of its critical acclaim, Anora follows the story of a young stripper from New York, as she’s swept up in a romance with the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. The film has received praise for its comedic, yet confronting twist on a Cinderella story, with themes of class disparity and transactional relationships.

Dune: Part Two

The latest in the Dune series, Dune: Part Two continues the epic space opera right where the last one left off. With the defeat of House Atreides behind him, Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides fights to be accepted by the Fremen people and liberate them from the Empire’s control. With the third installment expected to come late next year, this is a must watch for Sci-fi fans looking to stay in the loop.

Nobody

With a sequel currently in theaters, it’s a good time to check out this action-comedy starring Bob Odenkirk. Nobody introduces us to Hutch, a seemingly passive family man who reaches a breaking point after a home invasion leads to a run in with a local crime lord, bringing back the old him. With shades of Taken and John Wick, Nobody takes a self-aware and humorous approach to the ‘secret badass’ action trope.

Conclave

If the recent inauguration of Pope Leo has you fascinated with the inner workings of the papacy, Conclave is a must watch. The film follows the election of a new Pope after the former's passing. With four bishops all vying for the position, there’s no shortage of drama and intrigue. Secrets are revealed and backs are stabbed as Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, leads the conclave to elect the new leader of the Vatican.

Better Man

Are you looking for a biographical musical based on the life of Robbie Williams, in which he’s played by an anthropomorphic monkey? Not many people were, but despite a poor performance at the box office, the film was actually quite well received by those who watched it. The story is an emotionally impactful and uplifting journey through the ups and downs of a young man/monkey reaching for stardom, interspersed with quality musical performances.

Snowpiercer

This 2013 film by acclaimed director, Bong Joon-ho, is set in a post-climate collapse world, where the only survivors are those aboard a train on a neverending journey around the world. The film includes themes of class, power and environmentalism, and is a good fit for those looking for a movie with a message more so than a plot that makes perfect sense.

Thunderbolts*

One of the latest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts* is set shortly after the events of Captain America: Brave New World. With the Avengers out of the picture, the head of the CIA, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, hires a group of super villain anti-heros to do their dirty work for them. The film follows this dysfunctional but charming group of misfits as they learn to work together, leading to their eventual rebrand as ‘The New Avengers’.

The Menu

The Menu is a dark horror comedy set at Hawthorn, an invite-only fine dining restaurant located on a private island. Tyler Ledford and his date Margot Mills, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, are invited to the island for a lavish dining experience, only for each course to get weirder than the last. This satirical parody of fine dining culture received rave reviews and is perfect for those with a strong stomach.

The Martian

Based on the 2011 novel of the same name, The Martian is a grounded sci-fi story following Matt Damon as botanist Mark Watney, a member of a Mars expedition left behind after being assumed dead. With help four years away, Mark does whatever it takes to survive. The film jumps between Mark’s resourceful survival efforts, and the process and politics behind planning his rescue on earth. If you’re looking for a sci-fi movie where you might learn a thing or two, this is a good pick.

CODA

Named after the acronym for children of deaf adults, CODA is a heartwarming story following Ruby, the child of two deaf parents and the only hearing person in her family. When her family’s fishing business is threatened with having their fishing licence revoked for not having a hearing person on their boat, Ruby is torn between helping her family or following her dream of being a singer. 

Killers of The Flower Moon

The latest from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, Killers of The Flower Moon, is a subversion of the Western genre, centering the experience of Native American people in 1920s Oklahoma. The murders of several members of the Osage nation leads to the discovery of a plot to usurp land rights from the native people after oil was found on their ancestral land.

Argylle

While maybe not one for the critics, this spy action-comedy is a bit of goofy fun for the whole family. This spin-off from the Kingsman franchise follows introverted author, Elly Conway, as she discovers that the plot of her latest book appears to be coming to life as she’s writing it. The film’s cast includes big names like Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Dua Lipa, John Cena and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Gladiator II

Ridley Scott has returned 24 years later to direct the sequel to his classic film, Gladiator. The film features appearances from Hollywood stars like Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn. The story begins 16 years after the original, following Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, in his fight against the corrupt emperors, Caracalla and Geta. 

The Super Mario Bros Movie

Based on the most successful gaming franchise of all time, The Super Mario Bros Movie has managed to buck the trend of cringeworthy video game movies. To save their failing plumbing business, Italian-American brothers, Mario and Luigi, venture into the sewers of New York to fix a main line leak, before being sucked into a warp pipe and transported to the Mushroom Kingdom. 

Oppenheimer

This biographical thriller was one of the most highly-rated films of 2023, featuring a jaw-dropping performance by Cillian Murphy. The film is a non-linear retelling of the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist responsible for the development of the atomic bomb that ended World War II. Directed by blockbuster director, Chris Nolan, this is a must watch for cinephiles and history buffs alike.

The Substance

Featuring a career-defining performance by Demi Moore, this body horror film is a cutting critique on celebrity culture and the way society treats women's bodies. The story follows Moore’s character, Elisabeth Sparkle, who, struggling as an aging celebrity with a fading career, takes a black market drug known as ‘The Substance’. This drug splits her in two, creating a younger version of herself that she inhabits to relive her career as a young actress. 

Spider-Man: No Way Home

The ultimate Spiderman crossover movie, No Way Home sees Tom Holland's Spiderman come face to face with his Tobey Mcguire and Andrew Garfield counterparts in this Marvel Multiverse hit. With the return of classic Spiderman villains like the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Venom, this movie is a verified love letter to Spiderman fans.

The Beekeeper

The Beekeeper is a great pick if you’re looking to turn your brain off and settle in for a high-violence action thriller. Jason Statham plays a retired assassin—from the top secret agency The Beekeepers—on a warpath against an international crime ring to get revenge for his neighbour who fell victim to a phishing scam. Statham’s character, Adam Clay, faces off against the FBI, CIA, Secret Service to uncover a conspiracy that goes right to the top.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights

This 1993 comedy parody of the Robin Hood story is a cult classic, and the acting debut of comedian Dave Chappelle as Ahchoo, son of Asneeze. The story follows Robin of Loxley on this adventure to dethrone King John and retrieve the key to Maid Marian’s chastity belt, all while evading assasination by mafioso, Don Giovanni. Yes, these are all really plot points in the movie, and it only gets weirder. While some jokes may have aged better than others, this movie may be worth a watch if you’re feeling some 90s comedy nostalgia.

Johnny Mnemonic

An early entry to the cyberpunk genre, this film features Keanu Reeves as the titular character Johnny Mnemonic, a data courier who had his childhood memories overwritten to store data too sensitive to be transferred over the web. Set in a dystopian future dominated by megacorps and organised crime, humanity has contracted a digital plague known as NAS, and unbeknownst to him, Johnny has the cure in his brain. 

The Emu War

Based on the famous historical conflict of the same name, The Emu War follows a ragtag group of soldiers in a brutal and gruesome battle against their greatest foe yet. Following the kidnapping of his son at the hands of the Emu Queen, Major Meredith leads his men behind enemy lines in the name of justice. This movie is a great pick if you love so-bad-its-good CGI and want to see how an Emu could possibly hold a machine gun.
