Looking to fly Emirates using your Qantas Points? Here’s what you need to know.

Can you use Qantas Points on Emirates?

You can use Qantas Frequent Flyer points to purchase eligible Emirates flights, using Qantas’ Classic Flight Rewards and Points Plus Pay. Bear in mind that you’ll need to pay for taxes, fees and carrier charges on top of this, with Frequent Flyer guides and review website Point Hacks says the carrier charges levied on reward bookings with Emirates are typically among the highest in the industry. It’s also important to note that the further the flight (usually expressed in one-way miles) the more Qantas Points you’ll generally need to spend.

Here’s the number of Qantas Points you would need for a Classic Flight Reward for some Emirates flights, based on a one-way economy ticket at the time of writing:

  • Sydney to Dubai: 48,200 points
  • Sydney to Athens: 58,900 points
  • Sydney to Cape Town: 77,200 points

Previously, Emirates flights required the same number of Qantas Points as Qantas flights on the same route. But now you’ll generally need more Qantas Points to fly with Emirates, as well as other partner airlines. You can look at the Qantas Points Classic Flight Rewards tables to see a general list of current points totals required for certain distances for Emirates and other partner airline flights. You can also use the Qantas calculator and input your flight details.

When you’re ready to book, you can search for eligible Emirates flights through the Qantas website by logging into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

Can I use my Qantas Points to upgrade my Emirates ticket?

Unfortunately, you can’t upgrade your Emirates flight using Qantas Points. This means you can’t upgrade from economy to business class, even on a rewards ticket purchased with Qantas Points. Upgrading your seat in this way is generally only available on Qantas branded flights and certain other partner airlines.

Can you earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points on Emirates?

Yes, you can typically earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points on eligible fares and flights with Emirates. The number of points will depend on where you fly and the fare you purchase. Find out how much you could earn with the Qantas earn points calculator.

If you’re flying on a Qantas codeshare flight with Emirates, you can maximise the number of points you earn by choosing the Qantas (QF) flight number option. For these flights, you can earn Qantas Points at the Qantas rate rather than the lower partner airline rate.

Unfortunately, you can’t earn Qantas Status Credits on Emirates flights at the time of writing. You can, however, earn Status Credits if you’re flying on a Qantas codeshare and choose the Qantas (QF) flight number option.

Can I use Emirates lounges as a Qantas member?

Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold, Platinum and Platinum One members can access Emirates lounges throughout Australia, Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, when flying with Qantas or Emirates. Eligible members can also bring one guest with them.

Other benefits include priority check-in, boarding and waitlisting, additional checked baggage and express immigration, depending on your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier. You can find out more on the Qantas website.

How to research and book Emirates flights using Qantas Points

Using the Qantas website is one of the best ways to find and book Emirates reward flights using your Qantas Points. These reward flights may appear online up to 330 days before departure according to Points Hack.

You’ll need to enter details into the Qantas ‘Book a trip’ section such as where you’re departing from and flying to, the dates in which you’re doing so, the class you plan to travel in (e.g. economy, business, first class etc.) and how many travellers you have. Finally you’ll need to select the ‘Rewards’ option to see eligible rewards flights. From here you should see your flight options and the approximate cost in Qantas Points, as well as the extra costs that may apply.
