How do I stream?

Here are some tips to get you up and running.

  1. Get a stable internet connection: Unlike traditional cable or satellite TV, streaming services rely entirely on your internet connection. This means your internet bandwidth and data allowance play a big role in the quality and amount you can stream.
  2. Choose your streaming device: Most modern streaming services can be accessed on almost any device with an internet connection. This could be a smart TV, tablet, laptop or mobile device. If you have an older TV, you may need to purchase a streaming device like Hubble, a Fetch box or an Amazon Fire Stick.
  3. Compare and choose your provider: Next, choose the streaming platform with shows you want to watch for the right price. You can also choose to have multiple services, as many Australians do, but be mindful of your budget as costs can quickly add up

Streaming tips from our expert

Eden Radford, Canstar Spokesperson

If you’re looking to get the best value from a streaming service, here are some tips to avoid blowing your budget.

Know what you like to watch

Subscribe to the content you enjoy the most. For example, families with kids might prefer Disney+, while sports lovers may prefer Kayo or Stan Sport.

Find the subscription tier that matches your needs

Consider how many people will be using the service at once and if you really need extras like Ultra HD, which add to your monthly bill.

Take advantage of freebies

Time any free trials for periods when you’ll be able to make the best use of it, and make sure to set a reminder for when the offer ends if you plan to cancel.

See if it’s part of a perk

You may be eligible for discounted or free streaming as a perk of other services or products you buy. For example, some telco or energy plans include free subscriptions to big-name platforms like Netflix, Spotify or Paramount+.

Rotate between services

Rather than pay for multiple video streaming services at once, use one at time. Watch all the content you want on one platform, cancel your service, then move to another. This will save you money and means you’ll have fresh content available if you hop back to a previously used service.

Don’t forget free streaming

If you don’t mind the occasional ad, you can find plenty of great on-demand content from the free-to-air networks’ streaming services, or alternatives like YouTube and Tubi.

Sharing is caring

Splitting a subscription between friends and family can cut costs, but be aware that many streaming services are now disabling password sharing between different households.
