How much does the iPhone 17e cost?

Apple is not just sticking to its ‘iPhone under $1,000’ gimmick for the 17e — it’s actually lowering prices when compared to the 16e.

This year’s ‘cheap’ iPhone begins at $999 for the 256GB of storage, which is the same price as the 128GB iPhone 16e at launch. The larger 512GB size is also available for $150 less than last year’s model.

Outright Australian pricing for the iPhone 17e is:

  • iPhone 17e 256GB: $999
  • iPhone 17e 512GB: $1,399

This is the first major phone release of 2026 to buck the trend of rising or static prices. Increased RAM demand and overall manufacturing cost increases have led to a price jump for Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series, while Google’s low-cost Pixel 10a launched last month with the same price as its 2025 model.

When can I buy the iPhone 17e in Australia?

The iPhone 17e will be available for pre-order in Australia from 1.15 a.m. AEDT on March 5. It will arrive in stores on March 11.

You can buy directly from the Apple Store and retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys. Customers can also order the iPhone 17e on phone plans from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

What features does the iPhone 17e include?

Design and display

It may be cheaper, but the 17e is no less durable than other iPhones, with aerospace-grade aluminium and IP68-rated water and dust resistance. It features the same tough Ceramic Shield 2 glass display as the iPhone 17, offering increased protection against scratches and lower glare in direct sunlight.

Aside from the Ceramic Shield 2 upgrade, the 17e offers an identical screen to the 16e. You’ll get a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology and an edge-to-edge design, with a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz — lower than the 120Hz ProMotion scrolling available on the standard iPhone 17. Screen brightness is also the same, at a max of 800 nits in typical use and 1,200 nits in peak light.

Apple has again included the Action button on the phone's side, which gives you one-press access to quick actions such as Visual Intelligence, ring/silence toggle, voice memos, translation, the camera app, flashlight and more. However, the 17e doesn’t include the camera control sensor that’s available with the rest of the iPhone 17 range, or the Dynamic Island screen cutout that works as a widget/notifications centre.

Battery and performance

The iPhone 17e uses Apple’s latest A19 chip with Apple’s newest C1X cellular modem, plus a 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. This all allows for a fast and freeze-free performance, especially in gaming: the 17e can run graphically-demanding AAA game titles with ray tracing for realistic lighting and reflections in-game.

Buyers will also get Apple Intelligence integration, which offers a range of AI features such as Live Translation, Call Screening, Hold Assist and smart shortcuts. Visual Intelligence has also been extended to the iPhone screen, which allows 17e owners to do more with content such as photos or videos by searching for similar images, summarising text, or asking ChatGPT for more details.

All this performance is powered by Apple’s specially-designed battery, which the company says offers up to 26 hours of video playback and 21 hours of video streaming from a full charge. The iPhone 17e is fast-charge capable, and can be boosted by up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20-watt adaptor. This is also the first iPhone ‘e’ to be compatible with Apple’s MagSafe magnetic accessory range, so you can snap on fast or wireless chargers easily.

Cameras

As with the iPhone 16e, the 17e features the 12-megapixel True Depth camera in front, and just one camera in the rear — a departure from the standard multi-camera setups in more expensive Apple phones. However, that sole 48-megapixel Fusion camera is a two-in-one camera system, with an integrated 2x Telephoto lens and the option to shoot at either 24-megapixel or 48-megapixel resolutions.

Apple has updated several of its popular camera modes: for example, Portrait Mode now offers improved depth control and the ability to recognise people, dogs and cats. HDR is also enhanced, with better renderings of skin tones, shadows and highlights. The 17e also comes with the option to record 4K video with Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second, plus Spatial Audio for professional and immersive sound.

Software and extras

The iPhone 17e includes the iOS 26 operating system out of the box, along with 5G connectivity, Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection. You’ll get Face ID recognition, Apple Pay, Siri voice assistance and dual-SIM support for both nano-SIM and eSIM.

You can pick up the iPhone 17e in 256GB and 512GB storage sizes, and in Black, White or Soft Pink finishes.

Should you buy the iPhone 17e?

Customers wanting the useability, sleek design and performance of an Apple iPhone, but not willing to spend the $1,399 minimum for the iPhone 17, may be more than happy with the newest 17e. While it’s not a huge upgrade from the iPhone 16e, the fact that this year’s ‘budget’ Apple phone offers more value for money is reason enough to skip the 2025 model and go straight to the newest device.

However, if you’re not fussed about the Apple brand, Google’s just-released Pixel 10a gives you comparable-to-better specifications for $849 — albeit with 128GB of storage ($999 for 256GB). The Pixel’s comprehensive suite of Gemini AI features may have the edge over Apple Intelligence, and it also has a bigger and brighter screen with a faster refresh rate.

If you’re looking for an Android phone, there’s also great options for well under $1,000 available from Samsung, OPPO and Motorola. Customers looking for an iPhone alternative have a wide range of devices to choose from, so there’s no need to be locked into the Apple ecosystem to find great value.
