What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is a contactless digital payment system that also allows you to store electronic versions of your banking cards on Apple devices, such as Apple iPhones and Apple Watch. You can then use Apple Pay in two ways.

  • In-person payments: Use the device to make contactless payments via cards stored in the device’s digital wallet app. Compatible Apple devices include hardware that allows users to place their phone near a store’s card reader to pay with their stored banking card(s).
  • Online shopping: Pay for items at the checkout, when you see an ‘Apple Pay’ option.

Apple Pay’s digital wallet app doesn’t just store credit and debit cards but also other e-documents such as loyalty cards (for example Woolworths Rewards and Flybuys), participating transport passes, and certain tickets (for example boarding passes and theatre tickets).

Apple also has their own digital card called Apple Cash as well as a digital and titanium credit card called Apple Card. Both are currently only available in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions about Apple Pay Credit Cards

To set up Apple Pay, you need to find the Apple Wallet App on your Apple device (via the Settings menu) and ensure it is enabled. You then need to add your Apple Pay-enabled banking cards to it, which can be done either via the Wallet App (by tapping ‘add card’) or the card’s banking app. To enable online payments, turn on the ‘Use Apple Pay When Available’ option. To allow payments on your Mac, turn on the ‘Allow payments on Mac’ option.

Once it’s set up, you can use Apple Pay through Apple’s digital wallet app to make purchases in-person where contactless payments are accepted. To do this, you’ll need to open your Wallet app to reveal your chosen card, or, in the Settings menu, you can choose an option to activate your card by double clicking on a side button.

When shopping online, you will know if online stores or apps allow you to pay with Apple Pay if you see the Apple Pay button or an Apple Pay payment option during check-out.

You can use Apple Pay to make purchases either online or in person using your Apple device. Apple Pay uses a device-specific account number and unique code for each transaction instead of your card number when making purchases. This means your card number is never shared between Apple Pay and the business you’re purchasing from.

Apple states that there are several layers of security to Apple Pay. In order to use Apple Pay on your device, you will need to set up a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID before you’re able to access Apple Pay functions.

Since Apple Pay uses a device-specific account number and unique transaction code when making purchases, Apple does not share your card details to the business you’re purchasing from.

Apple also claims on their website that they do not collect any of the transaction information details that could be linked back to the individual when using Apple Pay.

However, it is wise to check the terms and conditions of your bank card provider about what protections are extended when using their card and Apple Pay. For example, the use of third-party payment systems such as Apple Pay may impact things such as fraud protection or travel insurance that may come as a feature of the card. Check with your financial institution where applicable.

It is also wise to keep the device’s software up to date, and research what to do if you can’t access your device, such as it being lost, stolen or defective.

And never disclose your Apple ID, passwords, banking codes, etc, to anyone, and be vigilant against scams which try to get you to reveal this information.

Contactless payments, or tap-and-go payments, uses radio frequency identification (RFID) or near-field communication (NFC) — a subset of RFID — to send encrypted information wirelessly to other devices. You will find RFID technology in your contactless-enabled physical credit and debit cards and NFC technology for digital contactless payments.

In order for NFC to be used, the device is required to be in very close proximity to the machine reader for the information to be sent. This requirement adds extra security for contactless payments when used between cards or devices that have NFC capabilities and point-of-sale systems capable of reading NFC data.

Apple states that it does not charge any fees when using Apple Pay across any platforms.

However, keep in mind that your credit card still has its own interest and fees involved with their use that is separate to Apple Pay and involves the credit card provider.

Businesses can also apply a ‘credit card surcharge’ to these transactions too, regardless of whether you’re using a physical or digital card.

Apple Pay only works on Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch.

However, Android does have their own version of contactless payment called Google Pay. Samsung also has its own version called Samsung Pay that also utilises NFC payments through Samsung devices.

As of writing, Apple Pay is supported by 121 banks in Australia, which includes the big four banks.

You can find a full list of participating providers in Australia on Apple’s website.

It should be noted that banks are the ones that allow for the use of Apple Pay and certain cards may not be eligible for Apple Pay. Banks also have the ability to restrict any of their cards from making mobile payments. Eligibility to earn credit card rewards points or cashback offers may also be affected with the use of Apple Pay. See your credit card’s terms and conditions or call your card provider to query for full details on their compatibility with Apple Pay.

Apple card is a credit card by Apple and issued by Goldman Sachs Bank USA. It is currently only released and available in the US.

As of writing, there are no plans to release this in Australia.

Apple Cash is Apple’s digital card that can be used through Apple Pay as well as in Apple’s Messages and through Apple’s virtual assistant Siri. Apple Cash is currently only available in the US and issued by Goldman Sachs Bank USA..

As of writing, there are no plans to release this in Australia.

This advice is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this advice is right for you.

Canstar may earn a fee from its Online Partners for referrals from its website tables, and from sponsorship or promotion of certain products. Fees payable by product providers for referrals and sponsorship or promotion may vary between providers, website position, and revenue model. Sponsorship/promotion fees may be higher than referral fees. If a product is sponsored or promoted, it’s an ad and it is clearly marked as such. An ad might appear in different places on our website, such as in comparison tables and articles. Ads may be displayed in a fixed position in a table, regardless of the product's rating, price or other attributes. The location of an ad doesn’t indicate any ranking or rating by Canstar. Payment of fees for ads does not influence our Star Ratings. See How We Get Paid to find out more. Payment of fees for ads does not influence our Star Ratings or Awards.

The Credit Cards Star Ratings are updated daily based on product features at that date, except for the Overseas Travel profile which is updated annually. Current rates, product features and fees are displayed and may be different to what was rated. The results don’t include every provider in the market and we may not compare all features relevant to you. You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. Depending on which card feature/use you are looking at, the results will be sorted as follows:

  • Low fee is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Rewards is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Frequent Flyer is sorted by Star Ratings, then highest airline points per dollar, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Balance Transfer is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest balance transfer rate, then lowest rate for the longest period, then lowest revert rate, then lowest upfront fee, and then alphabetically by brand. Please note that Balance Transfer Star Ratings are not for balance transfer suitability but are instead based on the Low Rate profile.
  • All card types is sorted by highest Points per dollar spent, then lowest Annual fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Overseas Travel is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest currency conversion on purchases, then lowest annual fee.

You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our Credit Cards Star Rating Methodology and our Travel Credit Card and Travel Debit Card Star Ratings Methodology. The Occasional Overseas Traveller rating is shown in the table. The rating shown is only one factor to take into account when considering products.

The products and Star Ratings in the table might not match your exact inputs in the selector. Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands (e.g. income, loan amount or monthly spend), but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. The results will show the products that most closely match your selection, based on our profiles. If you are unsure about any terms used in the comparison table please refer to the glossary.

What is a Target Market Determination?

A Target Market Determination (‘TMD’) is a document that explains which people particular financial products may be suitable for (the target market) and sets out any conditions around how financial products can be distributed to consumers.

Why do product issuers provide Target Market Determinations?

From 5 October 2021, TMDs are compulsory for most financial products.

Issuers and distributors of financial products must take reasonable steps that are likely to result in financial products reaching consumers in the target market defined by the product issuer.

We recommend that you consider the TMD before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD.
