Canstar's Pet Insurance Award Methodology

How Scores are Calculated

The awards for Outstanding Value Pet Insurance are given by comparing how well insurers' best policies perform for different pet types and coverages. They consider eight different situations, such as whether it's for a small dog or a cat, and whether it's accident and illness cover or includes routine care. When deciding the winners, Canstar gives different importance to each pet type. For example, policies for medium dogs are a big part of the decision (40%), while policies for cats are a smaller part (10%).

Consumer Profiles & Award Categories

To figure out how good each policy is, Canstar scores them across a range of categories. This score is split equally between how good the price is (Price Score) and how good the features are (Feature Score). For the Price Score, Canstar looks at how much you'd pay each month or year, plus half of your excess (the amount you pay first when you make a claim). They get quotes from different areas and for pets of different ages, giving more importance to younger pets. The Feature Score looks at many different things the policy offers, like what it covers and how easy it is to make a claim, with more important features getting more points.

Products Evaluated

Canstar's Pet Insurance Awards look at different pet insurance policies. They check two main types: those covering accidents and illnesses, and those covering accidents, illnesses, plus routine care like check-ups. To be considered, a policy must be available across the country, directly from the insurer, and be a standalone, lifelong plan. It needs to cover at least three common pet illnesses and have a generous yearly payout limit of at least $10,000, paying back 80% or more of vet bills. For routine care awards, it also needs to cover things like teeth cleaning or vaccinations.
