Health insurance tips from our expert

Don’t set and forget
Health insurance isn’t a ‘set and forget’ expense. Your needs change, and so do policies. Take half an hour at least once a year to review your cover. Are you still paying for pregnancy and birth-related services when your kids are in high school? Or have you picked up a new sport that might put you at higher risk of injury? A quick review can help you cut out what you don’t need and ensure you’re covered where it matters.
Consider a higher excess
A higher excess means you’ll pay more out of pocket if you need treatment, but it can significantly reduce your premiums. If you’re fit, healthy, and not making frequent claims, this could be a way to trim down your monthly bill. Just make sure you have enough savings to cover the excess if you ever need to use your policy.
Loyalty won’t always save you money
Health insurers love long-term customers, but that doesn’t mean they’ll reward you for sticking around. If you’ve been with the same provider for years, chances are you’re paying more than you need to. Before your policy renews, shop around, compare policies, and see if switching could save you money. And don’t be afraid to call your insurer and ask for a better deal – you might be surprised at what they offer to keep you.
A quick calculation on how much you could save is likely to be enough to spur you into action.

The Health Insurance Cover Ratings are updated monthly, based on the information held in our database at the time of rating. While we aim to maintain monthly updates, there may be occasional delays. The data on Canstar's database is sourced from the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO) database and information provided by providers. Providers are given the opportunity to review and verify this data periodically and upon request. Ratings are reviewed and recalculated monthly to ensure accuracy by aligning with the PHIO data release schedule, although some insurer-level data is updated less frequently by PHIO and may not change month-to-month.
Cover Ratings reflect the data available as at the date listed in the Cover Rating pop-up on the table. While Cover Ratings are reviewed and recalculated monthly, PHIO may update some of its data annually.
The results don’t include every provider in the market and we may not compare all features relevant to you.
You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our Health Insurance Cover Rating Methodology. The rating shown is only one factor to take into account when considering products.
The Cover Rating does not match your exact inputs. Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands, but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. The results will show the products that most closely match your selection, based on our profiles. If you are unsure about any terms used in the comparison table please refer to the glossary.
