If you’re one of the estimated 700,000 people who apply for a tax file number (TFN) each year, it’s now become easier, thanks to a new partnership between the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Australia Post.
Rather than finding and completing a paper-based Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals (NAT 1432) form, you can now jump online (go to ato.gov.au), complete the online application form, print it out and take it along – with appropriate identification – to a participating Australia Post retail outlet. This has the double benefit of being quicker as well as avoiding the need to post confidential proof of identity documents to the ATO.
“Australia Post is trusted by the community to handle their sensitive information,” says Australia Post General Manager Financial, Identity & Commercial Services, Andrew Maitland. “”Offering identity checks for your Tax File Number is just another way we’re making it easier and more secure for people to interact with different organisations for important personal and work-related needs.”
There are currently more than 230 Australia Post retail outlets across the country that offer the service, with 475 outlets to be available by the end of June this year. A full list of postal outlets is available on the ATO website.
