About Bupa Health Insurance

Bupa Australia is part of the Bupa Group, which is an international healthcare company with over 29 million health insurance customers. In Australia, Bupa is best known as a health insurance provider, but it also offers a range of other insurance products, such as home, pet, car and travel insurance.

What health insurance products does Bupa offer?

Bupa’s health insurance policies are designed to suit a variety of different customers in different life stages, including singles, couples, families and single parents. At the time of writing, Bupa provides the following hospital, extras and combined hospital and extras products:

  • Hospital cover options: Customers can choose from Basic Accident Only, Basic Plus Starter Hospital, Bronze Plus Simple Hospital, Silver Plus Essential Hospital, Silver Plus Advanced Hospital and Gold Comprehensive Hospital policies.
  • Extras cover options: Customers can choose their level of extras cover, including Extras Saver, Freedom 50 Extras, Starter Extras, Freedom 60 Extras, Core Extras,  Freedom 60 Boost Extras, Wellness Extras, Super Extras, Super Extras Active, Top Extras, Top Extras Boost.
  • Combined cover options: Customers can choose from all tiers of hospital cover combined with varying levels of extras cover, which can include cover for services such as dental, optical and more.
  • Ambulance cover: Customers can choose between Emergency Only or Premium Ambulance policies—which includes non-emergency trips capped at $5,000 a year. It’s important to keep in mind that in Queensland and Tasmania, residents can receive taxpayer-funded ambulance transportation from their respective state governments.

You can also compare Gold, Silver, Bronze and Basic hospital cover policies, as well as extras policies with Canstar. It’s important to read all relevant documentation, such as the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD), for any policy you are considering.

Can I get dental cover with Bupa?

All of Bupa’s extras policies include cover for general dental. How much you are covered for, how much you will get back when you make a claim and your annual limits will be determined by the extras policy you choose.

Core Extras, Freedom 60 Boost Extras, Wellness Extras, Super Extras, Super Extras Active, Top Extras and Top Extras Boost policies also offer cover for major dental (i.e. complex oral surgery, Root Canal Therapy and Fillings, Crowns and Dentures). Additionally, Bupa’s Basic Plus Starter Hospital and higher-tier hospital cover policies include coverage for dental surgery.

Does Bupa’s health insurance cover physiotherapy?

Almost all of Bupa’s extras policies offer cover for physiotherapy—with the exception being the Extras Saver policy. How much you are covered for, how much you will get back when you make a claim and your annual limits will be determined by the extras policy you choose.

Does Bupa’s health insurance cover obstetrics?

Only Bupa’s Gold Comprehensive Hospital policy offers cover for obstetrics (pregnancy and birth). This is due to pregnancy related medical costs being quite high, especially through the private health system.

Does Bupa offer family policies that cover adult children?

Yes, adult children (classified as student or non-student dependents) can remain on eligible Bupa family health policies until their 32nd birthday—depending on certain restrictions. These include having to study full time at a university, TAFE or other educational institution (apprenticeships excluded), not be receiving income from an education provider and not being married or living in a de facto relationship. Visit Bupa’s website for more information.

How do I join Bupa?

The Health Insurance Star Ratings were awarded in November 2024 and data in the table is current as at that date, updated from time to time to reflect product changes notified to us by product issuers. The results don’t include every provider in the market and we may not compare all features relevant to you. You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our Health Insurance Star Rating Methodology. The rating shown is only one factor to take into account when considering products.

The products and Star Ratings in the table might not match your exact inputs in the selector. Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands (e.g. income, loan amount or monthly spend), but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. The results will show the products that most closely match your selection, based on our profiles. If you are unsure about any terms used in the comparison table please refer to the glossary.

Companies listed in the table, or in ads, may use or be used by another company to arrange, issue, distribute or sell its insurance policies to customers. For more information on the issuer of the policy, please read the Product Disclosure Statement.

If you are seeking to replace an insurance policy, you should consider your personal circumstances, including continuing the existing cover until the replacement policy is issued and cover confirmed. Your current policy may have different features to products currently on the market. Please consider what features are right for you when comparing insurance products and refer to the provider for further details on a policy.

What is a Target Market Determination?

A Target Market Determination (‘TMD’) is a document that explains which people particular financial products may be suitable for (the target market) and sets out any conditions around how financial products can be distributed to consumers.

Why do product issuers provide Target Market Determinations?

From 5 October 2021, TMDs are compulsory for most financial products.

Issuers and distributors of financial products must take reasonable steps that are likely to result in financial products reaching consumers in the target market defined by the product issuer.

We recommend that you consider the TMD before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD.
