Qantas Premier Platinum credit card insurance
The card offers the following types of complimentary insurance at the time of writing:
- Overseas Travel cover, for risks such as cancellations, medical emergencies, delays, loss of baggage or personal effects, and personal liability
- Transport accident insurance – cover for injury loss of life resulting from an accident which occurred during travel
- Interstate flight inconvenience insurance – cover for delay or cancellation costs related to a domestic interstate flight
- Global hire car excess waiver cover – provides cover for any insurance excess you’d otherwise have to pay stemming from damage to or loss of a hire card

Qantas says that exclusions, terms and conditions apply to the insurance that’s offered to primary cardholders (cover does not extend to supplementary cardholders, Qantas says). For example, if you book a holiday against medical advice, the travel insurance provided by the card may not cover you. As with any insurance product, it’s important to understand the inclusions and limitations of a policy before committing to it. For a full list of exclusions and other important information, see Qantas’s Complimentary Insurance Terms and Conditions document.

Qantas says its Platinum card offers Mastercard Zero Liability fraud protection, as well as the ability to track your money in real time or lock your card using the Qantas Money app. Cardholders can also contact the Qantas Premier Concierge service at any time if assistance is required.
Qantas Premier Platinum credit card: Potential pros and cons
We’ve rounded up some features and conditions of the card you might find helpful, and some you might find less so, depending on your situation. When researching products, it’s important to think about your own circumstances and, if you do decide that a credit card is right for you, to choose one that suits your needs.
What you might like | What you might want to look out for |
Bonus points: Earn up to 100,000 bonus points in the first year. Qantas says the offer is open to new approved applicants who apply before 28 May, 2020. | Spending requirements: In order to earn the point bonus, you’ll need to spend $5,000 or more within 90 days, and on eligible purchases only (cash advances, balance transfers, refunds, chargebacks and special promotions are not included, for example). This might not be suitable for you individual spending habits. |
No cap on points earned: This card doesn’t impose a limit on the number of Qantas points you can earn per statement period. | Reduced earn rates: While there’s no limit on the point you can earn, for money spent within Australia, once you have earned 10,000 points in any given statement period, your card’s point earn rate is cut in half for additional purchases. |
Additional benefits: this card nets you two complimentary lounge invitations a year, and one 10% (economy class) or 20% (business class) discount on up to nine seats on one flight per year | Benefits come at a price: The card’s $299 ongoing annual fee means you would need to consider carefully whether the potential benefits you outweigh the cost of the card. |
