Is your coffee machine making you money? That’s the dream for the majority of new at-home baristas switching from the café to the kitchen counter, with most estimating their machine will pay for itself within the first six months.

And they’re not wrong. If a fresh-ground latte costs $1 to make at home versus $5 for a daily takeaway coffee, you’re looking at $1,460 of savings each year. That’s a pretty ridiculous price for a bit of latte art and a plastic lid!

Our central bank is going to be working overtime next week, with the credit and debit card surcharge ban officially kicking in on Thursday. As Wallet Win reader Andrew points out, it’s not just the major banks’ credit cards that are getting an overhaul. We’ve rounded up the cards headed for a rewards haircut, which in some cases, is more like a buzz cut.

Also on the agenda for the RBA is yet another rate hike, but the banks aren't waiting for the Governor's final word on Tuesday. They’re already moving fixed rates ahead of the central bank and, in the case of CBA, potentially factoring in more than one hike 😱.

Shopping online? Hacks to dodge delivery traps

Delivery fees can sabotage online shopping savings – hit the checkout at 10 different online stores and you'll easily spend $100 getting the goods to your door. Fortunately, dodging these costs can be simple. Take advantage of free trials with platforms like Amazon or pay for a program like OnePass, which unlocks free shipping from the likes of Kmart and Officeworks for $40 a year. You can also add extra items to your cart to reach a free shipping threshold, returning them when you’re next at the shops. Though, this can backfire. Watch out when buying clearance items and keep an eye on the return window.

Saving on prescription glasses? I call that ‘specs appeal’

Prescription glasses can quickly put a dent in your budget, even if you have private health insurance. Recently, our colleague Cuong bought THREE pairs of prescription glasses online for just $150. The trick? Ask your optometrist for your prescription details, then buy your new glasses through an online retailer that lets you upload your script. Cuong used Velor Eyewear, but there are many other sites that do this. Just make sure you get a tax invoice to claim a rebate from your insurer—and make sure you’ve got your measurements right, so your shiny new specs actually fit.

Supermarket secret societies?

Woolworths-brand sugar has nearly 1,000 reviews on the supermarket’s website, Cadbury Favourites has two? Turns out much of that own-brand love comes via Bunch, Woolworths' invite-only community of product reviewers. These hand-picked members get free products, and perks scale up the more active they are in the program. Coles has a similar program, Coles Circle, and IGA has its Review Crew too, so Woolies isn’t alone in this game. Importantly, reviewers are rewarded whether their opinions are glowing or scathing. Want in on the action? Bunch is currently at capacity, but you can join the potentially long waitlist.
