About Commonwealth Bank credit cards

Commonwealth Bank (CommBank, CBA) is one of Australia’s four major banks. Commonwealth Bank is a provider of credit cards as well as a wide range of financial services and  products in banking, investing and insurance.

Commonwealth Bank was founded by the Australian Government under the Commonwealth Bank Act in 1911 and began operation the next year. It operated as a national bank for Australia until it was fully privatised in 1996. The business has more than 800,000 shareholders and more than 50,000 people working within the company group, according to CBA.

Commonwealth Bank offers a range of Mastercard credit cards, including interest-free, low rate, low fee and rewards cards.

Frequently Asked Questions about CommBank Credit Cards

Different types of credit cards may have different eligibility criteria. However, in general, to apply for a CommBank credit card, you must meet the following criteria:

  • at least 18 years old
  • legally have the right to work in Australia
  • not currently bankrupt
  • have a good credit history
  • agree to a credit check

Before you apply, it could be a good idea to check your credit score.

For more information on eligibility requirements, visit the provider’s website.

If eligibility requirements are met, you can apply online or call 13 2221. If you require a translator, CommBank recommends using the government’s free Translating and Interpreter Services to communicate with them.

CommBank also advises the following evidence may be asked:

  • Proof of income (for example payslips)
  • Money you owe (for example, personal loan statements)
  • Visa details if you’re not a permanent resident

In order to activate your card, you will be required to register for NetBank, Commonwealth Bank’s online banking, or the CommBank app.

Once you receive your card, you can activate your credit card on the CommBank app or online through NetBank by logging into your Commonwealth Bank account. You will be required to set a PIN for your credit card to be activated.

Commonwealth Bank advises that not all replacement cards need to be activated and you can check your activated cards on the CommBank app.

Commonwealth Bank credit card interest is calculated at the end of each statement period.

The interest is calculated separately for ‘purchases’, ‘cash advances’, ‘balance transfers’ and ‘SurePay instalment plans’. Interest on each of these categories is added to the balance. Commonwealth Bank states in their Conditions of Use that fees are considered ‘purchases’.

Once the total balance is calculated, the relevant balances are averaged over the statement period then multiplied by the applicable daily interest rate (the annual rate divided by 365) and multiplied again by the number of days within the statement period.

The interest is also charged on the last day of each statement and includes the interest from that statement period, including the last day, along with any interest that has yet to be charged from previous statement periods.

Interest accrues until the card is paid off in full. Late fee charges may apply if the minimum monthly payments and any overdue amount is not paid by the due date.

Interest-Free Period

If an interest-free period is available for your CommBank credit card, interest will not be charged as long as you fully pay the closing balance for current and previous statement periods by their respective due dates.

CommBank also states in their Conditions of Use that the interest-free period automatically applies when you pay your entire account balance in full, starting on the day of the payment until the next statement period’s due date.

Your credit limit for your Commonwealth Bank credit card will depend on the information you provided in your application, including the credit card you have chosen. Each CommBank credit card type also has its own maximum and minimum credit limit.

You can decrease your credit limit at any time using the CommBank app or via their online banking, NetBank.

For a request to increase your credit limit, you will have to apply through the CommBank app or NetBank. Applications for a credit limit increase will be subject to approval.

If you require help for either increasing or decreasing your credit limit, you can call 13 2221 or visit a CommBank branch.

You can close your CommBank credit card using the CommBank app or internet banking, NetBank. If you require help closing your card, you can also call 13 2221 or visit a CommBank branch.

CommBank advises that you will receive a confirmation and final statement once the credit card account has been successfully closed.

All outstanding balances must be paid in full, including any accrued interest, fees and pending transactions, before the account can be closed.

CommBank Awards Points are awarded and accumulated when eligible purchases are made. The number of Awards Points awarded per whole Australian Dollar spent will vary depending on the card type.

The number of Awards Points you can earn may be limited by how much you spend in a statement period or the type of purchase made. Depending on the card, there may also be a cap on the maximum number of Points you are able to earn. You can find these details in your letter of offer.

Commonwealth Bank credit cards are also compatible with Qantas Frequent Flyer program, so you can opt to earn Qantas Points instead of CommBank Awards Points.

Important information

For those that love the detail

This advice is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this advice is right for you.

Canstar may earn a fee from its Online Partners for referrals from its website tables, and from sponsorship or promotion of certain products. Fees payable by product providers for referrals and sponsorship or promotion may vary between providers, website position, and revenue model. Sponsorship/promotion fees may be higher than referral fees. If a product is sponsored or promoted, it’s an ad and it is clearly marked as such. An ad might appear in different places on our website, such as in comparison tables and articles. Ads may be displayed in a fixed position in a table, regardless of the product's rating, price or other attributes. The location of an ad doesn’t indicate any ranking or rating by Canstar. Payment of fees for ads does not influence our Star Ratings. See How We Get Paid to find out more.

The Credit Cards Star Ratings are updated daily based on product features at that date, except for the Overseas Travel profile which is updated annually. Current rates, product features and fees are displayed and may be different to what was rated. The results don’t include every provider in the market and we may not compare all features relevant to you. You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. Depending on which card feature/use you are looking at, the results will be sorted as follows:

  • Low fee is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Rewards is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Frequent Flyer is sorted by Star Ratings, then highest airline points per dollar, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Balance Transfer is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest balance transfer rate, then lowest rate for the longest period, then lowest revert rate, then lowest upfront fee, and then alphabetically by brand. Please note that Balance Transfer Star Ratings are not for balance transfer suitability but are instead based on the Low Rate profile.
  • All card types is sorted by highest Points per dollar spent, then lowest Annual fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Overseas Travel is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest currency conversion on purchases, then lowest annual fee.

You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our Credit Cards Star Rating Methodology and our Travel Credit Card and Travel Debit Card Star Ratings Methodology. The Occasional Overseas Traveller rating is shown in the table. The rating shown is only one factor to take into account when considering products.

The products and Star Ratings in the table might not match your exact inputs in the selector. Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands (e.g. income, loan amount or monthly spend), but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. The results will show the products that most closely match your selection, based on our profiles. If you are unsure about any terms used in the comparison table please refer to the glossary.

What is a Target Market Determination?

A Target Market Determination (‘TMD’) is a document that explains which people particular financial products may be suitable for (the target market) and sets out any conditions around how financial products can be distributed to consumers.

Why do product issuers provide Target Market Determinations?

From 5 October 2021, TMDs are compulsory for most financial products.

Issuers and distributors of financial products must take reasonable steps that are likely to result in financial products reaching consumers in the target market defined by the product issuer.

We recommend that you consider the TMD before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD.

Any advice on this page is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this general financial advice is right for your personal circumstances. Canstar provides information about credit products. We’re not suggesting or recommending a particular credit product for you. If you decide to apply for a Credit Card, you will deal directly with the provider, not with Canstar. It’s important you check rates and product information directly with the provider. Consider the Target Market Determination (TMD) before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD. For more information, read our Detailed Disclosure.

Before you elect to terminate or modify existing lending arrangements, it is recommended that you consider all associated fees and application costs, as well as the timing and impact these changes could have on your wider financial arrangements and personal circumstances.
