About Bankwest credit cards

Bankwest started as the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia in 1895 and started trading under the name Bankwest in 1994, supporting customers across Australia, not just WA. In 2008, Bankwest joined the Commonwealth Bank Group.

Bankwest provides various financial services and products including credit cards, savings accounts, term deposits, home loans and personal loans.

Bankwest credit cards are issued by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bankwest Credit Cards

Different types of credit cards may have different eligibility criteria. However, in general, to apply for a Bankwest credit card, you must meet the following criteria:

  • at least 18 years old.
  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • have a good credit history
  • agree to a credit check.

Before you apply, it could be a good idea to check your credit score.

For more information on eligibility requirements, visit the provider’s website.

If eligibility requirements are met, you can apply online, visit your nearest branch or call 13 17 19. Bankwest recommends having the following documentation ready with your application:

  • Proof of identity (such as an Australian driver’s licence, Medicare card or passport)
  • Proof of income (such as most recent payslips, PAYG summary, or, if you’re self-employed, your most recent superannuation fund statement)

If you’re applying online, Bankwest recommends allowing for at least 15 minutes to fill out the online application form.

Once you receive your bankwest card in the mail, you can activate your credit card using Bankwest’s mobile app or Online Banking. You will have to set a PIN to use your card but you can change it at any time.

For the app, you can activate your card by following the prompts when you go into the ‘Cards’ tab in the menu and choosing your new card from the list.

For Online Banking, you can activate your card by following the prompts when you click into ‘Self service’ and then ‘Manage my cards’ and choosing your new card from the list.

If you do not have access to either method, you can also call 1300 796 844 to activate your Bankwest card.

Bankwest sends your credit card statement every month when there’s activity with your account or an outstanding balance on your card. It shows the activity and balance of your statement period and will advise on the due date of any outstanding payments.

Interest on your Bankwest credit card accrues daily and is calculated at the end of each statement period and debited on the last day of the period. The calculation is applied to the average daily unpaid balance from your previous statement, using the annual percentage rate outlined in your Schedule, which you can find in your Card Contract. In other words, the statement will show the cumulative daily percentage rate (either purchase, cash advance or balance transfer) applied to the outstanding daily balance showing in each day of your previous statement period.

Balance transfers and cash advances are calculated similarly with their own respective annual percentage rate that can be found in your Schedule on your Card Contract. Interest on balance transfers and cash advances are charged from the day the balance transfer or cash advance is completed.

The daily percentage rate for each respective category is calculated by dividing their respective annual percentage rate (as outlined in the Schedule in your Card Contract) by 365 (or 366 if it is a leap year).

Interest-Free Period

If your Bankwest credit card has an interest-free period for purchases (up to 55 days), you will not be charged interest on eligible purchases as long as you pay the total outstanding amount on your card by the outlined due date. If you have a balance transfer but have an interest-free period available to your Bankwest credit card, you will have to pay the closing balance owing on your statement, excluding any promotional or introductory balance transfer amount, by the payment due date.

The credit limit of your Bankwest credit card will depend on the information you provided in your application and the respective Bankwest card’s own conditions.

You can decrease your credit limit at any time using Bankwest’s mobile app or Online Banking.

However, in order to increase your credit limit, you will have to call Bankwest on 13 17 19 or visit your nearest branch. A request to increase your credit limit will be subject to approval.

Bankwest notes in their terms and conditions that they can decrease your credit limit at any time without prior notice but will notify you at the time of reducing your credit limit if they do.

You can close your Bankwest credit card either through Bankwest’s Online Banking website or via their app. You can also call Bankwest on 13 17 19 if you require help with closing your card.

For Online Banking, you can close your credit card by selecting the card in your account list and then clicking ‘see more account details’ and choosing the ‘Close account’ tab.

For the mobile app, you can close your card by going into the ‘Accounts’ tab in the bottom menu, then the ‘Manage’ tab and then choose ‘Close account’.

If you have any outstanding balances on the card, Bankwest will continue sending statements regarding any money owed on the card until they are paid in full. The card account will be closed 30 days after the full outstanding amount is paid. Once closed, Bankwest will send you a letter of confirmation regarding the closure of your credit card.

The number of rewards points you earn on your eligible Bankwest credit card will depend on the type of rewards credit card you have chosen. You can refer to your Card Contract for the exact number of points earned per dollar spent for your Bankwest credit card. The points on eligible purchases will be automatically credited to your Bankwest Rewards account.

Each card will have a points cap for each year unless an unlimited amount is stated for the card.

In order to redeem your Bankwest Rewards points, you must first have spent an initial $1,500 on eligible purchases using your credit card and held the card for at least 60 days.

Important information

For those that love the detail

This advice is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this advice is right for you.

Canstar may earn a fee from its Online Partners for referrals from its website tables, and from sponsorship or promotion of certain products. Fees payable by product providers for referrals and sponsorship or promotion may vary between providers, website position, and revenue model. Sponsorship/promotion fees may be higher than referral fees. If a product is sponsored or promoted, it’s an ad and it is clearly marked as such. An ad might appear in different places on our website, such as in comparison tables and articles. Ads may be displayed in a fixed position in a table, regardless of the product's rating, price or other attributes. The location of an ad doesn’t indicate any ranking or rating by Canstar. Payment of fees for ads does not influence our Star Ratings. See How We Get Paid to find out more.

The Credit Cards Star Ratings are updated daily based on product features at that date, except for the Overseas Travel profile which is updated annually. Current rates, product features and fees are displayed and may be different to what was rated. The results don’t include every provider in the market and we may not compare all features relevant to you. You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. Depending on which card feature/use you are looking at, the results will be sorted as follows:

  • Low fee is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Rewards is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest Annual Fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Frequent Flyer is sorted by Star Ratings, then highest airline points per dollar, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Balance Transfer is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest balance transfer rate, then lowest rate for the longest period, then lowest revert rate, then lowest upfront fee, and then alphabetically by brand. Please note that Balance Transfer Star Ratings are not for balance transfer suitability but are instead based on the Low Rate profile.
  • All card types is sorted by highest Points per dollar spent, then lowest Annual fee, then alphabetically by brand.
  • Overseas Travel is sorted by Star Ratings, then lowest currency conversion on purchases, then lowest annual fee.

You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our Credit Cards Star Rating Methodology and our Travel Credit Card and Travel Debit Card Star Ratings Methodology. The Occasional Overseas Traveller rating is shown in the table. The rating shown is only one factor to take into account when considering products.

The products and Star Ratings in the table might not match your exact inputs in the selector. Sometimes the methodology uses profiles with categories or bands (e.g. income, loan amount or monthly spend), but sometimes a single methodology, without any categories or bands, is applied. The results will show the products that most closely match your selection, based on our profiles. If you are unsure about any terms used in the comparison table please refer to the glossary.

What is a Target Market Determination?

A Target Market Determination (‘TMD’) is a document that explains which people particular financial products may be suitable for (the target market) and sets out any conditions around how financial products can be distributed to consumers.

Why do product issuers provide Target Market Determinations?

From 5 October 2021, TMDs are compulsory for most financial products.

Issuers and distributors of financial products must take reasonable steps that are likely to result in financial products reaching consumers in the target market defined by the product issuer.

We recommend that you consider the TMD before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD.

Any advice on this page is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this general financial advice is right for your personal circumstances. Canstar provides information about credit products. We’re not suggesting or recommending a particular credit product for you. If you decide to apply for a Credit Card, you will deal directly with the provider, not with Canstar. It’s important you check rates and product information directly with the provider. Consider the Target Market Determination (TMD) before making a purchase decision. Contact the product issuer directly for a copy of the TMD. For more information, read our Detailed Disclosure.

Before you elect to terminate or modify existing lending arrangements, it is recommended that you consider all associated fees and application costs, as well as the timing and impact these changes could have on your wider financial arrangements and personal circumstances.
