About Woolworths Insurance

Woolworths are best known for their supermarkets, but they are also now the trusted insurer for many Australian drivers. Woolworths Insurance was founded in 2011, after the successful launch of Woolworths Money credit cards in 2008. They have a car insurance claims app available on the Apple iTunes Store.

Woolworths spokespeople said they did not need to advertise their car insurance because their massive consumer database from their loyalty program already told them who would be a high or low insurance risk.

Director of Group Retail Services, Penny Winn, reported at a marketing industry event, “Customers who drink lots of milk and eat lots of red meat are very good car insurance risks – versus those who eat lots of pasta and rice, fill up their petrol at night, and drink spirits.”

Woolworths does not have its own general insurance licence from APRA, so its insurance offerings are underwritten by Hollard Insurance Company, one of the largest insurers in Australia. Woolworths employs over 198,000 people across Australia.

How Woolworths supports the community

Woolworths donates over $47 million each year in cash donations and volunteer hours. Their partnerships include:
Fresh Food Rescue to donate 1,300 tonnes of food to charity
Earn and Learn to provide equipment for schools
Fresh Food Future to invest in sustainable Australian agriculture
The Salvation Army to provide emergency relief for natural disasters
New Zealand Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal

How Woolworths supports the environment

Woolworths recently completed their 2007-2015 goals:

  • Reduce carbon emissions by 40%, bringing emissions back to 2006 levels – 33% reduction achieved as of 2014.
  • Reduce water use by 200 million Litres per year by 2010.
