Policy Options: What QBE home insurance covers

The inclusions below represent a selection of what is covered. Additional conditions may apply to different features. Home and Contents

  • Liability cover for damage to other people and their property caused by an incident at your home connected to you owning or living there, up to $30 million.
  • Damage or loss of your home building and its contents caused by fire, flood, storm, theft, vandalism or malicious damage or riot, escaped water, explosion, lightning, earthquake, tsunami, impact, or animals who don’t live at your property, up to sum insured.
  • Emergency repairs and protection of building to prevent further damage or loss, up to $500.
  • Demolition and removal of debris, up to reasonable costs.
  • Replacement of locks and keys after break-in, up to $500.
  • Temporary accommodation while your home is unliveable, up to 12 months or 10% of building sum insured.
  • Discharge of mortgage fees if your building is a total loss, up to legal fees only.
  • Modifications of home for paraplegia or quadriplegia, up to $10,000 per year.
  • Outdoor contents stored in open air.
  • Accidental glass breakage including windows and stove cooktops.
  • Fusion damage (burn-out of electrical motors), up to $2,000.
  • Compensation for death as a result of an insured event, up to $5,000.
  • Spoilage of perishable food, up to $500 or 1% of contents sum insured.
  • Building materials awaiting installation, up to $2,000.
  • Storm and flood damage to fences and gates, up to $10,000.
  • Trees and plants, for up to $500 per plant or tree, up to $1,500 in total.

  • Contents temporarily in transit, up to $5,000 for an insured event or $200 for theft, collision, or glass breakage while in transit in your own car.
  • Contents at your new home for up to 14 days before new policy comes into effect.
  • Reasonable increases in your living expenses if you are forced to evacuate from your home by a government authority, for up to 60 days.
  • Environmentally friendly modifications: Installation of rainwater tanks and solar heating on a new home, up to $2,500.
  • Environmentally friendly appliance upgrade, up to $500 per item.
  • Domestic Workers Compensation available in most states and territories to cover someone you employ to do domestic cleaning or gardening work around your home.
  • Optional cover for accidental damage.
  • Optional cover for portable valuables while away from home.
  • Optional cover for contents in storage or while living in student accommodation.
  • Optional Cycle Cover for your bicycle, riding equipment, and bike accessories, up to sum insured for bicycle.

Landlord Insurance

  • Damage or loss of your investment building and contents you own or are responsible for, caused by fire, explosion, theft, malicious damage, riot, storm, flood, lightning, escaped water, earthquake, impact, up to sum insured.
  • Fixtures you installed in your strata title unit.
  • Loss of rent while building is unliveable, up to 12 months or 10% of building sum insured.
  • Demolition and removal of debris at reasonable cost.
  • Emergency repairs and protection of building to prevent further damage or loss, up to $500 if the damage was caused by one of the insured events.
  • Fusion damage (burn-out of electrical motors), up to $2,000.
  • Discharge of mortgage fees if your building is a total loss.
  • Building materials awaiting installation, up to $2,000.
  • Storm and flood damage to fences and gates, up to $10,000.
  • Environmentally friendly appliance upgrade, up to $500 per item.
  • Optional cover for rent default.
  • Optional cover for malicious acts and theft by tenants or tenants’ guests, up to $10,000 for building and $10,000 for contents.

Owner Builder Warranty Insurance

  • Required by law in Victoria and WA, if you spent more than $16,000 (Vic) or $20,000 (WA) on the work, and it was completed in the last 6.5 years (Vic) or 7 years (WA).
  • This insurance policy protects the new owner when they buy your home from you, if they discover defects in work you’ve carried out as the owner builder.
  • If you die, disappear or become bankrupt, the new owner can make a claim on your policy to recover their costs.
