Policy Options: What NIB health insurance covers

The inclusions below represent a selection of what is covered. Additional conditions may apply to different features. Hospital Only Policy

All Hospital Only and Hospital and Extras policies include the following basic hospital cover:

  • Emergency ambulance services
  • Hospital accommodation for day surgery, overnight stays, and special care unit (intensive care) stays
  • Operating theatre fees and charges, surgical fees
  • Doctor fees for in-hospital consultations
  • Ward fees including nursing care
  • Pharmacy (prescription medications and medical supplies used in-hospital)
  • Accidental injury (sustained after joining)
  • Appendix removal
  • Tonsils and adenoids removal
  • Dental surgery
  • Colonoscopies
  • Gastroscopies
  • Grommets in ears
  • Gynaecological services
  • Hernia repair
  • Joint investigations
  • Joint reconstructions

Hospital policies of a higher level also cover the following:

  • Brain surgery
  • Cancer treatment
  • Heart procedures (Cardiac)
  • Palliative care
  • Rehabilitation with allied health (physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and occupational therapy)
  • Stroke treatment
  • Back surgery
  • Eye treatments (Cataracts and eye lens procedures)
  • Joint replacements
  • Renal dialysis
  • Assisted reproductive services (IVF)
  • Infertility investigations
  • Sterilisation
  • Obesity surgery (Gastric banding and abdominoplasty)

Exclusions:

  • Cosmetic surgery to enhance appearance
  • Private hospital emergency or out-patient fees
  • Specialist booking fees
  • Private room accommodation for day surgery
  • Nursing home care
  • Respite nursing care
  • Take-home items such as crutches

Levels of cover:

NIB health insurance has four main levels of hospital cover, with the weekly costs for a single varying (at time of writing) from $13.82 for basic hospital to $35.08 for top hospital coverage. Go to the NIB website for the latest prices.

  • Basic Hospital:
    Basic level cover.
    Includes all basic hospital cover; excludes higher level of hospital cover.
  • Standard Hospital:
    Medium level cover.
    Includes basic hospital cover, plus brain surgery, cancer treatment, heart procedures, palliative care, rehabilitation, stroke treatment.
  • Advantage Hospital:
    High level cover.
    Includes basic hospital cover, plus brain surgery, cancer treatment, heart procedures, palliative care, rehabilitation, stroke treatment, back surgery, eye treatments, joint replacements, renal dialysis.
  • Top Hospital:
    Top level cover.
    Includes basic hospital cover, plus brain surgery, cancer treatment, heart procedures, palliative care, rehabilitation, stroke treatment, back surgery, eye treatments, joint replacements, renal dialysis, assisted reproductive services (IVF), infertility investigations, obesity surgery, pregnancy and childbirth.

Extras Only Policy

Extras Only policies can be added to Hospital Only policies, so you can choose the level of extras you want.

Levels of Extras Only cover:

  • Core Extras:
    Basic level cover.
    60% back on core extras: general dental, major dental, preventative dental, optical, physiotherapy.
  • Core Plus:
    Medium level cover.
    Higher annual limits than “Core extras”. 60% back on core extras: general dental, major dental, preventative dental, optical, physiotherapy.
  • Wellbeing + Core Extras:
    High level cover.
    60% back on core extras and wellbeing extras: general dental, major dental, preventative dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, dietary, health aids, healthier lifestyle, natural therapies, preventative tests, psychology.
  • Top Extras:
    Top level cover.
    75% back on all extras: general dental, major dental, preventative dental, optical, physiotherapy, antenatal and postnatal, chiropractic, osteopathy, dietary, exercise physiology, eye therapy (orthoptics), health aids, healthier lifestyle, hearing aids and speech processors, home nursing, natural therapies, occupational therapy, orthodontics, pharmacy, podiatry including orthotics, preventative tests, psychology, speech pathology.

Waiting periods for extras services:

  • Emergency ambulance services: 1 day
  • Pharmacy: 2 months
  • General and preventative dental: 2 months
  • Physiotherapy: 2 months
  • Antenatal and postnatal: 2 months
  • Chiropractic and osteopathy: 2 months
  • Dietary: 2 months
  • Exercise physiology: 2 months
  • Eye therapy: 2 months
  • Podiatry: 2 months
  • Natural therapies: 2 months
  • Occupational therapy: 2 months
  • Speech pathology: 2 months
  • Home nursing: 2 months
  • Psychology: 2 months
  • Psychiatric treatment in-hospital: 2 months, followed by 10 months on minimum benefits (Total 12 months before full benefits apply.)
  • Preventative tests: 6 months
  • Optical: 6 months
  • Healthier lifestyle: 6 months
  • Major dental, orthodontics: 12 months
  • Health aids: 12 months
  • Hearing aids and speech processors: 36 months (3 years)

What it covers:

  • Covers international and overseas students visiting Australia to study.
  • Hospital Only cover.
  • Emergency ambulance services.

Overseas Visitors (Visa Health Insurance)

What it covers:

  • Covers people visiting Australia on a work visa, holiday visa, or temporary visa.
  • Includes repatriation benefit.
  • Excludes out-patient medical services and bone marrow and organ transplants.
  • Cover is provided by an NIB subsidiary company, IMAN.

  • NIB Foundation: Established in 2008, NIB Foundation have contributed over $12 million to support over 80 Australian programs tackling important health issues. Community and charity grants are available.
