Policy Options: What AHM health insurance covers

The inclusions below represent a selection of what is covered. Additional conditions may apply to different features. Hospital Only Policy

All Hospital policies include varying levels of cover for the following:

  • Emergency ambulance services
  • Hospital accommodation for day surgery, overnight stays, and special care unit (intensive care) stays
  • Operating theatre fees and charges, surgical fees
  • Doctor fees for in-hospital consultations
  • Specialist doctor fees
  • Rehabilitation (physiotherapy) – partial cover
  • Psychiatric services – partial cover
  • Palliative care – partial cover
  • Surgically implanted prostheses
  • Appendix removal
  • Tonsils and adenoids removal
  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Pharmacy (prescription medications and medical supplies used in-hospital)
  • Brain surgery
  • Cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Colonoscopies and bowel surgery

Hospital levels at a higher level also cover the following:

  • Heart procedures (cardiac) such as angiograms & stents, or open heart & bypass surgery
  • Major eye surgery (cataracts)
  • Obstetrics, pregnancy and childbirth services
  • Assisted reproductive services (IVF and GIFT)
  • Dialysis
  • Spinal surgery
  • Obesity and weight loss surgery

Waiting periods for hospital services:

  • Psychiatric services: 2 months
  • Rehabilitation (physiotherapy): 2 months
  • Palliative care: 2 months
  • Pre-existing conditions: 12 months

AHM health insurance has five main levels of hospital cover, with the weekly costs for a single varying (at time of writing) from $17.20 for budget hospital to $30.05 for top hospital coverage (provided applicants are eligible for the full private health rebate). Extras Only Policy

AHM rewards loyalty by increasing the limits on your Extras the longer you hold an Extras policy with them. Extras Only policies can be added to Hospital Only policies, so you can choose the level of extras you want.

Levels of Extras Only cover:

  • Basic Extras:
    Claim back on 10 extras: routine dental, optical, pharmacy, dietary, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, natural therapies, health improvement benefits, ambulance.
  • Lifestyle Extras:
    Claim back on 15 extras: routine dental, complex dental, major dental, orthodontics, optical, laser eye surgery, pharmacy, dietary, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, natural therapies, health improvement benefits, psychology, ambulance.
  • Family Extras:
    Claim back on 25 extras: routine dental, complex dental, major dental, orthodontics, optical, physiotherapy, pharmacy, dietary, chiropractic, osteopathy, natural therapies, health improvement benefits, psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, eye therapy, podiatry, orthotics and orthopaedic shoes, hearing aids, antenatal and postnatal, medical oxygen, joint fluid replacement injections, travel and accommodation, ambulance.
  • Super Extras:
    Claim back on 27 extras: routine dental, complex dental, major dental, orthodontics, optical, laser eye surgery, pharmacy, dietary, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, natural therapies, health improvement benefits, psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, eye therapy, podiatry and orthotics, hearing aids, antenatal and postnatal, medical oxygen, joint fluid replacement injections, travel and accommodation, out-patient procedure room fees, post-op and medical aids, ambulance.

Waiting periods for extras services:

Barring promotional deals, the following waiting periods apply for extras cover:

  • Emergency ambulance services: 1 day
  • Major dental (root canal, periodontics, jaw injury): 12 months
  • Orthodontics: 12 months
  • Orthotics: 12 months
  • Hearing aids: 12 months
  • Antenatal and postnatal: 12 months
  • Medical gases: 12 months
  • Joint fluid replacement injections: 12 months
  • Laser eye surgery: 24 months (2 years)

Hospital and Extras Policy (Packaged Cover)

AHM health insurance has four main levels of packaged cover, with the weekly costs for a single varying (at time of writing) from $15.85 for Starter Flexi to $34.40 for Deluxe Flexi (including private health rebate). Go to the AHM website for the latest prices.

  • Black+White Starter Flexi:
    Basic level hospital cover, plus extras.
    Extras include: routine dental, complex dental, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy.
  • Black+White Lite Flexi:
    Basic level hospital cover, plus extras.
    Extras include: routine dental, complex dental, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, optical.
  • Black+White Classic Flexi:
    Medium level hospital cover, plus extras.
    Limit of $900 total or more on extras: routine dental, complex dental, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, optical, podiatry and orthotics.
  • Black+White Deluxe Flexi:
    High level hospital cover, plus extras.
    Limit of $1,100 total or more on extras: routine dental, complex dental, major dental, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, optical, podiatry and orthotics.

International Students (Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC))

What it covers:
